How to Pause Updates or Resume Updates for Windows Update in Windows 10


Windows Update keeps Windows 10 updated by downloading and installing the latest updates, drivers, and hotfixes released by Microsoft.

Starting with Windows 10 build 15002, you can temporarily pause updates from being installed for up to 7 days (Insiders) or 35 days (non Insiders). Some updates, like Windows Defender definition updates, will continue to be installed.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18282, Microsoft is making the Pause Updates feature easier to find by surfacing the existing option directly on the Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update page. Just like before, when Pause is enabled, some updates, like Windows Defender definition updates, will continue to be installed. In addition, Pause can be enabled for either a pre-defined number of days or until the specific day (day selector is available on Advanced options page).

When updates resume, your device will need to get the latest updates before it can be paused again.

Starting with Windows 10 edition will now be able to pause updates.

Starting with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, you will now also be able to pause both feature and monthly updates for up to 35 days (seven days at a time, up to five times).

This tutorial will show you how to pause updates for up to 7 days (Insiders) or 35 days (non Insiders) and resume updates for Windows 10 Windows Update.

*Warning You must be signed in as an administrator to pause or resume updates.


CONTENTS:

• Option One: To Pause Updates 7 Days at a Time for up to 35 Days
• Option Two: To Pause Updates until a Selected Date for up to 35 Days
• Option Three: To Resume Updates

OPTION ONE [/i] To Pause Updates 7 Days at a Time for up to 35 Days
1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the Update & security icon.

2. Click/tap on Pause updates for 7 days on the right side up to five times to pause updates seven days at a time for up to 35 days. (see screenshots below)

*note Each time you press Pause updates for 7 days, you will see the Update will resume on date change to add seven days for up to 35 days.

*note Windows Insiders will only be able to pause updates for up to 7 days.

3. When finished, you can close Settings if you like.











OPTION TWO [/i] To Pause Updates until a Selected Date for up to 35 Days
1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the Update & security icon.

2. Click/tap on Advanced options on the right side. (see screenshot below)



3. Under Pause updates, select a date you want in the Pause until drop menu. (see screenshot below)

*note Windows Insiders will only be able to pause updates for up to 7 days.



4. When finished, you can close Settings if you like.





OPTION THREE [/i] To Resume Updates
1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the Update & security icon.

2. Click/tap on the Resume updates button on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3. When finished, you can close Settings if you like.

Go to Start - Settings - Update and Security - Windows Update - Advanced Options.

From there you will be able to pause the updates.

Is there a delay after turning Pause Updates off?

I had turned Pause Updates ON because of concern about the name of an update. After being satisfied that the update was OK, I turned Pause Updates OFF and the update disappeared and has not been offered in the 10 hours since that time. The update is not
listed as already installed.

It's still showing 7 days in Settings for me in build 17035.

Yes. My test machine (System Two below) shows 7 days when I restore it's 1703 image, but its 1709 image (made by upgrading that same 1703 image) says 35 days. Being for test/support purposes, I keep it as 'vanilla' as possible - it's not been tweaked in any way.

No - I'm specifically talking about Pause Updates.

 

Odd, mine still only shows 7 days in build 17040. *Confused

 

Odd. Mine was upgraded with the publicly available 16299.15 USB made by the MCT after the launch on 17th Oct. with subsequent CUs to take it to 16299.64, speciffically the en-gb version (x86). It has never been on an Insider build.

Can we make it more than 7 days though?

I was on holiday (for 2 weeks) and had to use data through sim card in my laptop and could only make it pause 7 days.

I'm not talking about deferring feature updates but pausing any updates until later. I don't want 500MB of Adobe updates when I'm paying per MB. You can pause 7 days but then you get the whole lot anyway.

EDIT: I was using a cellular connection on 16299 if it makes a difference.

 

As a workaround, you could disable the "Windows Update" service until you're ready to install updates.

Hopefully we can pause more than 7 days in future though.

Perhaps at the same time we can figure out what the "Enabling this policy..." box is for.

It looks to do something remarkably similar to the slider above it although it isn't clear what policy it is talking about *Smile

Wondering why you didn't have on 1703 updates for current branch for business and delay for up to 365 days

 

If you have an Insider build installed, you wouldn't have the defer updates feature available. *Sad
