  1. Turning off Monitor makes Windows 10 thinks I have disconnected it. Re-Arranges desktop.

I just bought a new monitor and it's hooked up by the displayport.

Running in dual monitor mode. Second monitor hooked up by HDMI.

What is happening is that whenever I turn off the new monitor, Windows 10 thinks I've disconnected it (I get the device disconnected sound) and shuffles around the desktop to the second monitor. When I turn the monitor back on, it moves everything back to the main monitor, but now every program I had on the secondary monitor moves over to the primary (new) one.

Is there any way of preventing this from happening?

I read that this is an issue with displayports in general, but has there been any update that fixes it?

Thanks for any help in this matter.

Disconnecting and re-extending desktop to display, changes arrangement

This screenshot shows the display settings menu. It allows individual monitors to be disconnected and reconnected and moved around in relation to each other.

This video shows what happens to the monitor arrangement when a single monitor is disconnected and then reconnected. The purpose of disconnecting monitors and reconnecting them in this way is to prevent the cursor from moving to an unused display which makes it harder to find, to prevent wasted electricity on unused resources and maintain system performance that would be spent on unnecessary calculations inside the transistors that make a monitor display things.

desktop icons rearrange after connect/disconnect external monitor

I use a second monitor to extend my desktop every day at work. After upgrade to windows 10, everytime I disconnect the monitor and restart all of my icons are now shoved to the left and rearranged by type. This is very frustrating. I've got 'auto arrange
icons' deselected and haven't found any other options. This is getting pretty frustrating, anyone have any suggestions?

How to arrange desktop shotcuts in Windows 10.

    Hello Ken,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We will assist you in resolving the issue.

From the above description, I understand you want to know how to arrange desktop shortcuts.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

    • Are you not able to move and arrange the shortcut icons on the desktop?

    • Did you check if the Auto arrange icons option is enabled on your PC?

Enabling Auto arrange icons option will not let you to manually place the icons in the order of your choice. If you turn off the
Auto arrange icons option, you will be able to place the icons anywhere on your desktop screen.

Check if you have enabled Auto arrange icon option on your PC by following the steps below:

    • Right click on the empty space of the desktop and hover the mouse over
      View option.

    • Check if the Auto arrange icons option is checked.

    • If the option is checked, uncheck the
Auto arrange icons option from the sub window.

    • Close the windows, arrange the icons as per your choice and check if the changes are effective.

Write to us with the answers to the above questions and the status of the issue on the same post for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.
