TUTORIAL: How to disable "Send your device data to Microsoft"

    Hi all

If you go to Settings > Privacy > Feedback & Diagonistics, you will notice that the option closest to disabled is "Basic" under "Send your device data to Microsoft".

However, someone discovered a nice trick to completely disable the sending of device data to Microsoft.

Open the Registry editor, and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection and make a new 32-bit DWORD called AllowTelemetry, and then set it to 0.

Restart your computer, then go back to that Settings screen. You will see that the "Send your device data to Microsoft" option is greyed out.

    :)

That Windows activation requires telemetry, wouldn't it eventually cause problems, hmmm? Or for driver downloads through device manager. I doubt this is a very good idea.

Obviously you should have already activated Windows before you started messing with settings.

Who does driver downloads through Device Manager, anyway??? I get all my drivers from the manufacturer's websites.

Will it not affect getting future "windows updates"?

  7. No. I disabled Telemetry a few days ago (I also deleted the two services associated with Telemetry in addition to the AllowTelemetry=0 registry entry), and I got three Windows updates tonight (KB3081448, KB3081449 and KB3081452).

Citation needed (not that either of those things matter). By the way, Windows 10 Enterprise actually has the option to disable Telemetry right in the same spot where it will only go as low as "Basic" in other versions of Windows 10.

I "Stop" Windows Update at "Services" at the beginning of the session, but still get Windows Update. Is there a way out?

    @bobjoe
You also need to disable couple of services: Diagnostics Tracking Service & dmwappushsvc
    OR:
If you have Windows 10 Pro, you can do as follows and it will add the entry in the registry and also disable these 2 services.
    Gpedit.msc>Administrative Templates>Windows Components> Data Collection and preview builds>allow telemetry

    Set to enabled
0= this says enterprise only. but setting this to 0 adds the above registry entry to that locations

Okay, but how do you go back to the default settings where Microsoft is able to have your device data again?

Typically, 0=false and 1=true. Option one: change the value to true and reboot. Option two: delete the added entry and reboot. Either case, the greyed out option should become available again.

I thought about deleting that entry and rebooting, but computers can be complicated if you try to do something when you are unskilled for that. At least you helped me.
