Windows 10: .txt added to Notepad text documents?

When I turned my pc on today my notepad text document titles now include .txt in the name. Up until this point they've just been whatever I named them without the .txt in them. I'm not sure how or why this happened.

Text Document or Notepad - Right click on desktop

Earlier I was able to get a Text Document on my desktop but now I cannot

So earlier I used to follow these steps to get Text Document on my desktop

Step 1 : Right click on desktop

Step 2 : Cursor or mouse on New which has a arrow and then a menu pops out which has the option of creating Text Document on desktop and once you click on Text Document a notepad would appear on desktop

But now that option is missing

Do you mean you want text documents to be opened in Notepad?

If not, please explain this in more detail . . .

If that is what you want:

Right click any txt, choose 'Open With' - Choose Another App

Important - Check the box marked 'Always use this app to open txt . . .'

If Notepad is not in the list, scroll to the bottom and click 'More Apps'

Again if Notepad is not in the list, at the bottom, click 'Look for another app on this PC', then navigate to find Notepad - C:\Windows\Notepad.exe

 

Drag and Drop txt to Notepad won't work

Worked for me to open Notepad then drag a file such as .htm from Documents into it. It did not work to drag a document to the Notepad icon in Windows Accessories or when pinned to the Taskbar like it did in Win7 when I had Notepad pinned to the Start menu.
