Windows 10: Ultimate Word Games lagging badly when using the app but not on browser?

I've been playing Wordament for a few years now on Ultimate Word Games on PC and never once had an issue with it. However, the past week or so, it has been lagging to the point of being unplayable. When ads are running at the bottom, the game basically locks and, while the banner ad is playing, you can't do a single thing on the board until the ad ends and then you have about a 5 second gap between ads to try and get some words in. I thought maybe it was a problem with my PC's storage space so I checked but there is no issue there, there is easily enough storage space for things to be running
