Windows 10: Unable restore Microsoft authenticator backup

I have been using the same backup on my Microsoft authenticator app for the past few months and every time it has restored successfully my accounts but this time it didn't because I changed my phone I don't know why this happened. I had turned on the cloud backup and it's been on for as long as I could remember but this time it keeps telling me that no backup is associated with my account if I lose my account it's game over for me I'm not able to log into Instagram and many other accounts please help me as soon as possible

Microsoft Authenticator won't restore accounts

Hi

Welcome to Microsoft community.

To better determine your problem, you can first try the following steps.

Ensure both devices are using the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator from the Google Play Store.

Check your Microsoft Account settings to confirm that the backup feature is indeed enabled for your Authenticator app.

Try the backup and restore process again:

On the original device (Device A), open the Microsoft Authenticator app and go to Settings > Backup.

Make sure the backup is enabled and wait for it to complete if necessary.

On the second device (Device B), install Microsoft Authenticator and sign in with the same Microsoft Account used on the first device.

During the setup process on Device B, select the option to restore from backup and follow the prompts.

If the restore still fails, try signing out of the app on both devices and then sign in again on the second device (Device B) to see if it triggers the backup restore process.

Make sure there's a stable internet connection on both devices during the backup and restore process.

Regarding the lack of data export options in the app, some authenticator apps don't provide this feature. To mitigate the risk of losing access to your 2FA accounts, consider the following precautions:

When setting up new 2FA accounts, note down the QR codes or secret keys provided during setup. Store this information securely (e.g., in a password manager or encrypted file) so you can manually re-add the accounts if needed.

For existing accounts, if possible, disable and re-enable 2FA temporarily to obtain the QR codes or secret keys for backup purposes.

Consider using an alternative authenticator app that offers data export/import functionality, or consider using a hardware-based authenticator (like YubiKey) as a backup option.

Always exercise caution when managing 2FA accounts and keep backups of critical information in a secure manner.

Microsoft Authenticator Account Backup and Recovery: Coming to iOS

Howdy folks,

Many of you have asked for backup and recovery for the Microsoft Authenticator app. We’ve heard that need, and that’s why I’m happy to announce that we’ve just released a backup and recovery feature for that app. Now, your Microsoft Authenticator app will keep your account credentials, so you won’t get locked out of your accounts when you move to a new device.

We’re launching this feature beginning with iOS first, and we’ve already released a private preview to our iOS beta testers. Over the next few weeks, we’ll roll this out to all iOS users. We’re rolling out to iOS first as building the app using iCloud simplified our development. But later this year, we’ll add this feature to the Android version as well.

Try it out!

If you don’t have the Microsoft Authenticator app yet, get it here. If you want to try this feature before it’s available to the general public, sign up here to become a beta tester.

If you’re already one of our beta testers, you can install the update (version 5.7.0) on your iOS device once it’s available to you.

Turn on Backup

In the Microsoft Authenticator app, go to Settings. Under Backup, turn the toggle to ON for Auto backups and follow the prompts.

Behind the scenes, this is how it works:

We encrypt your backup data with your personal Microsoft account

We then store the encrypted backup with your iCloud account

And that’s it! Your account credentials are now backed up in the cloud and will stay up to date when you add, delete, or edit your accounts.

Recover on a new device

To recover the app on a new device, sign in to the same iCloud account and personal Microsoft account as on your previous device.

After you sign in, the following options will be available:

Your OATH verification codes for your third-party accounts and personal Microsoft accounts

The ability to enable push notifications for your personal, work, or school Microsoft accounts

If you have additional questions, check out our Microsoft Authenticator docs. You can also use the Microsoft Authenticator forum
to offer suggestions, ask questions, and talk with our support team and other fans of account security.
