Unable to access shared drive from my main computer from my laptops.

    Hello,

I just recently reformatted my system. A complete wipe and reinstall to start fresh. Recently changed jobs that was BYOD, to a non-BYOD company so I wanted a clean slate on my hardware.

Long story short, I have a USB Raid Encloser that handles my backups and media files. It's also used to act as a NAS so to speak, but not really. It's just a shared drive that only I have access to. After the reformat however, during the Windows Setup, I used my Microsoft account and now my user folder is truncated to only part of my email address 5 characters and I don't have a local admin password from what I can tell. It's my Microsoft account password.

When trying to connect to the drive, it prompts me for my password. As soon as I enter in my Microsoft account it fails and keeps asking me for a valid password.

Since I don't have a real local account it seems, I don't know how to get folder access.

Do I need to create a local account? Or should I just "switch" to a local account? How do I solve this?

Tried googling some solutions, but nothing really came up.

    :)

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.

  3. Cannot access shared network drive

I could scream! so much time wasted on this stupid error, as if time is not precious enough!
It probably would work fine if I could see the other computer! But I cannot see the other computer!

Unable to access files on Desktop from laptop

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand that you are unable to access the files on your desktop from your laptop. However, we would like to know the details requested below:

    • Do you receive any error message/code?
    • Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer?

Ideally, to share files between two computers, they should be connected to the same network.

We would like to know if you are able to access the drive using the IP address. Follow the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows key + R, to open
      Run
      dialog box.
    2. Type
      \\IPAddress
(ex: 192.168.x.x) and check if you are able to access the drive.

If you get any error, please click on the drop down arrow in the error dialogue box and let us know the error.

Also, check the sharing permissions for the shared folder. Refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Navigate to the location on the PC through which the files are shared.
    2. Right click on the folder and select Properties.
    3. Click on Sharing tab, and click on
      Advanced Sharing.
    4. Now, select the checkbox for Share this folder.
    5. Click on Permissions, select the check box for
      Allow Full Control.
    6. Click on OK (Twice).
