Windows 10: Unable to alt+tab out of certian programs

So,
This has only started happening recently, but sometimes when I alt tab, I'll see the selector go to another program, but it doesn't change. This has happened with a couple programs, most of which have custom windows (Origin, BF4, CS:GO, Garry's Mod, and other no border fullscreen processes) This is becoming more common, and as someone who alt tabs often, its frustrating to have to minimize windows to get to another or use win+tab and move it to another desktop. Any recommendations?

I haven't seen a post with a similar problem to mine, if there is one, then sorry...
I'll attach a gif of what I mean (its hard to re-create for some reason...)

Yes I normally keep my graphics cards up to date. I even used the ones my manufacturer gave me and still the same issue.

The BSOD error message is the following: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE ntoskrnl.exe. Has something to do with the nvidia cards i guess.

I have tried both a clean installment of windows 10 and of the graphics drivers and no luck. Ive tried turning off v-sync to see if that was the issue but again no luck.

 

Update: Spam-clicking a process or dragging it to the top of the screen (to fullscreen it) gives the window 'dominance'

 

I know of a similar (possibly related) problem with Excel windows (and it must be Excel, LibreOffice doesn't have this effect) . It's easily reproduced, just open two (or more) spreadsheets. With only one spreadsheet the problem doesn't show.

Using Alt-Tab to try to switch away from Excel brings up the thumbnails all right, but doesn't highlight the next window. Releasing the keys leave you still in the same window. This appears to be due to the way Excel itself handles the Tab key. You can switch, but you have to remember that to switch away from one of the Excel windows you have to use Alt-Tab-Tab (hold Alt and tap Tab twice).

There is an alternative way to use Alt-Tab that works for this Excel effect (and may help with yours). Ctrl-Alt-Tab brings up the same set of thumbnails, but they remain on-screen when you release the keys. Tab (or the arrow keys) moves the highlight and enter (or space) opens the selected window.

 

I don't even have excel on my computer... Excel is not the problem, its the custom made windows I think.

 

What Bree is saying is you should try CTRL + ALT + TAB.

The behaviour is different and may help you.
