Windows 10: Unable to alter default apps for opening files to specific applications

I recently got a refurbished asus zenbook, running windows 10 64 bit. After installing a lot of the software I had on my old computer, I noticed I was unable to change the default app used for opening file types to certain apps. For example, I was able to change the app that opens png and jpeg files to paint.net. I was able to swap the app that opens .mp3 to windows media player. However, when I try to change the app used for opening mp3 files to Audacity, I can go through all the steps of changing the default app, but when I click audacity, nothing happens. The same thing happens with changing the app used to open .txt files to Notepad++. I can change the txt file editor from notepad to WordPad, but not too Notepad++.

I've tried multiple ways of changing the default (Properties -> General -> click change, open with -> always use this app to open files, altering it in the settings) and none have worked. Though I can click the I want to change it to, nothing happens.

I've tried running an sfc scan, and also removing all school/work accounts from my computer, both with no luck.

Manually clicking open with every time isn't a big pain, but I would like to not have to. Any and all help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Default apps and open with files

Have you read my post? I already tried that. The file association default app wont work because .cbr is not listed in the list. And .png when I change the application to open it with adobe photoshop is not included in the list of default apps. But it works
with .jpeg just in .png

The above issue might have occurred due to the presence of missing system files and folders on the computer.



Before we assist further, did you try setting the default file type application from system
Settings page?



Follow the steps below to set default program/application to open a particular file from system
Settings page and check if the issue is resolved.

  Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type
  Default programs and select the top most search result.
  
• 
  Scroll down the page and click on Choose default apps by file type from the window.
  
• 
  Locate the file format, click on the program which is set to open the file type and select the application you want to set from
  Choose an App window.
  
• 
  Close the window and check if you are able to open the file type in the application set as default.

App to open .c6e0ec and .e8d549184 files

It seems that there is no default app set to open these kind of files. Can you still recall the type of app or program that opens this kind of file?

For us to isolate this issue, we suggest assigning a default app or program to open it. Follow the steps below:

• Open Settings and click System.
• Click Default apps.
• At the bottom, click Choose default apps by file type.
• Scroll down and look for the .e8d549184 file.
• Once found, click the + sign on the right and select the app you want to use.

Once you've successfully set the default app, try opening the file again and let us know how it goes.
