Unable to boot Windows 10 - no errors displayed

    Hello everybody

My first post here! I am testing Windows 10 on a separate disk. Last week I installed the latest build - 10041 if memory serves - and all was good.
I had a little trouble when I installed Virtualbox and the Virtualbox's USB drivers prevented my keyboard and mouse from working. I manually deleted all virtualbox's USB drives (from another OS) and Windows reinstalled the default ones.

Today I powered up my PC and after the sound card was initialised (I could hear the usual "click" over the speakers) the PC rebooted. Windows did not help, did not give any warnings or errors. Safe mode does not work either, PC reboots in the same place.
What is weird is that I enabled boot logging but I cannot find the file. I googled it and it should be under C:\windows\ntbtlog.txt but it's not there. I turned windows 10 HDD off as soon as the system rebooted - allowing Windows 7 to boot up, in case Windows 10 was deleting the log file during the following boot - but still the file is not there.

I'm a little stuck. I'd like to try and recover the system before I try to 'refresh' it.

Any help? I'm afraid I won't be able to give more information, I simply can't find any.

Thank you all for your help!
    Tony

    :)

    Recovering from KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE

    Hi Guru,

Thanks for the response. Found that page, unfortunately there's nothing there that helps me address the issue.

Currently my machine loops, first displaying the standard Unable to boot Windows 10 - no errors displayed :( BSOD screen, with the Kernel error, then restarting and attempting and failing at automatic (with the same Unable to boot Windows 10 - no errors displayed :(BSOD message).

Lulled by 10+ years on Mac, I don't have restore points set, and don't yet have a recovery disk.

What's got me flummoxed presently is that I'm unable to boot with my Windows 10 install DVD, so I've been unable to attempt repair that way, and am unable to attempt a re-install of Windows 10.

0xc1900101- ox40017- the installation failed in the second boot phase with an error during boot operation

Unable to upgrade from windows 8 to 10. After an unsuccessful attempt to upgrade to windows 10 from 8, I was rolled-back to Win 8. How do I fix the error: "0xc1900101- ox40017- the installation failed in the second boot phase with an error during boot operation"?

    Hi,

    That's great.
However, is there a way to upgrade if I cannot log into Windows?

If you can't boot into Win10, then the best option would be to run Startup Repair to see if it can fix it.
Another option would be to use System Restore to go back to a point where it was working.

If needed, you can boot to startup repair from a Windows 10 boot disk (or USB drive) that you may have used when installing it.
If not, post back for assistance in locating a copy that you can use on a USB drive.

    Hi,
I forgot about system restore. I usually disable it on my main OS, but it should be working under 10. I'll give it a go, it's not my main OS but I have installed quite a few applications and I'd rather not start again from scratch.

Thank you for your help, I'll report back soon!

You can DL the ISO and upgrade from it.

    Hi,
System restore is either disabled or not working, no points found. System refresh removes all the apps. I cannot find the logs. I downgraded to the previous build, still reboots at the same point.

I guess that next would be upgrading to the latest build. I cannot see a link for an ISO though, anyone?

    Thank you!

    Hi,

I cannot update the existing installation, Windows setup says that I have to run windows first and run the setup from there. If I go on with the custom installation it will install a fresh copy and move the old installation to another folder.

Again, Windows 10 is not my main OS so I could start afresh but is there a way to troubleshoot and see what's wrong with that? Why cannot I see the boot log file?

Thank you for all your help so far.

Assuming you have the ISO file, either on DVD or on external drive, try the following.

Mount the ISO while running under existing OS (10061?). Run (NOT boot) the SETUP.exe file. Choose the top first option. It will do what's called an "In-Place" upgrade, which will retain all your apps and progs, and most of your settings. Takes about 1 to 1.5 hrs, depending on your config.

Unable to boot Windows 10 - no errors displayed

    Hi,
Unfortunately I cannot access the OS, the PC reboots while booting up.
Or maybe you meant to run the command prompt and run setup.exe manually?

In most versions of Windows, if you run a Refresh it'll put a folder on the desktop with a list of the apps that it removed.
Is there any way you can gather any information? In particular, I'd like to look at the following reports to see if there's any information there:

First, Please provide this information (even though you're not reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum): Solved BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

    Next, please generate this report:

    Missed your last post.

Can you access the files from the Win10 installation?
If so, you may be able to see the folder on the Desktop for the apps that were removed.

Look in the Windows\Minidump directory of the Win10 installation to see if there are any memory dumps in there.

EDIT: Event Viewer logs are located in Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\
copy and zip up the Application and System logfiles (they end in .evtx), then upload them here also
