Unable to change disk drive letter

Hello, I'm a basic Windows 10 user, so any help without technical language would be very appreciated.I bought a new M2 SSD for my desktop, cloned it with WD's software, making sure to copy the OS with it and then physically replaced the old one to the new one, everything went fine there. Windows started fine, but some programs won't open, as it seem they are looking for the old drive D: instead of the new one C:. When checking the program's properties, I can see that it is referencing to the old Disk D:, which is no longer available, so I receive the error "The drive or network connectio

  2. How in WIN 11 do I change the drive letter of the CD/ROM drive?

    Thanks, Greg.

So this is what worked, step by step.

    Reboot

Drive is listed as E: in file explorer.

Drive not listed in Disk Management.

Insert DVD, it plays after short pause.

Disk management now shows Audio CD as E:

Right click, change letter to R: (while playing!)

    Reboot.

Drive now shows as BD-RE drive as R: in File Explorer.

    The bottom line is

    - File Explorer does not provide for changing drive letter afics.

    - Disk Management seems to need a disk to be in the drive for it to "see" the drive. I can't recall is this is Win 10 behaviour

I don't recall having any difficulty with this in Win 10 (its possible that the Win 10 default drive allocation was "after" my external drives; or I "just changed it").

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

  4. Unable to change disk drive letter

    changing drive letter

    Hi Cathie,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand the inconvenience caused. I will be glad to assist you with this.

The drive letters change automatically and alphabetically depending on the number of drives available in the computer. For example, if you connect another USB or drive to the computer, it would be named as I. This must be the reason why the letter got changed
    to H.

To better assist you, do let us know if there is already a G drive in the file explorer.

If not, you do have the option to change the drive letter through disk management according to your preference. Follow the steps below:

    1. Press Windows key + R to open the run command.

    2. Type diskmgmt.msc and press enter to open disk management.

    3. On the left hand side of the window, right click on the "H" drive and select "change drive letter and path".

    4. Click "change" and assign the preferred drive letter from the drop down list.

    5. Save the changes and restart the computer if necessary.

    Hope this helps.

Let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to help.
