Unable to connect to new network, neither wifi or Ethernet allow me to connect.

Recently got a new faster network, tried and cannot connect my win10 laptop dell latitude e7440 to it, when trying to connect via wifi in the network connections list it just doesn’t show, and by ethernet my laptop doesn’t even know it’s plugged in.Have ran bios system diagnostic and some other dell software system diagnostic but only problem they had with my laptop was that the battery is missing, the absence of the battery probably isn’t causing this problem I don’t think.Any help would be appreciated, any settings or adapter properties need changing etc.

    :)

How to connect to an existing wifi network?

As you suggested, I tried disabling the ethernet adapter and that caused wi-fi to connect, so the desktop wifi does work. Also, I accessed the router and changed the wireless network name (to wfCHS). Thanks!

However many problems are still unresolved:

My laptop behaves just as I want it to. Assuming the router has wifi turned on and the laptop has an ethernet connection, connection to the internet is by ethernet (no private network name), and the wi-fi connection is to my private network "wfCHS", but with no connection to the internet. (If I disconnect the ethernet cable, then wfCHS becomes connected to the internet and stays that way even if I reconnect the cable.) A directory listing shows both laptop and desktop under "Network". Great!

Things are rather different with the desktop. With Ethernet disabled, the desktop shows a wi-fi connection to the internet. Under Settings > Status it's called "wfCHS" but under Network Connections it's called wfCHS2. If I then re-enable the ethernet connection, the wifi connection stays enabled for a minute or two, then disconnects. Further, the ethernet connection is given the name wfCHS2 under both Status and Network Connections.

Why does the desktop give an (unwanted) name to the ethernet connection while the laptop doesn't?

Why does the desktop disconnect its wi-fi connection a minute or so after the ethernet connection is enabled, while the laptop doesn't?

Why does the desktop give two different names to the wifi connection, depending on whether it's viewed under Status or Network Connections, while the laptop doesn't?

Why does the laptop show the desktop under Network, while the desktop shows only itself?

Things are so convoluted that I'd be happy to start over. I've had the desktop "forget" the wi-fi connection as you suggested, then re-established it, but this hasn't helped. Can the ethernet connection also be "forgotten"?

Really appreciate the help you've given so far!

How to connect to an existing wifi network?

Thanks f14tomcat and Bree for your suggestions. Unfortunately they didn't help, and I'm now thinking it's a hardware problem. I have a laptop that connects to the wi-fi network with no problem, but I'm now trying to connect a new desktop. It is supposed have wifi and indeed there's a connection from the motherboard to a wifi antenna. I tried "forgetting" the previous wifi network and re-setting it up as you suggested. I was able to do so, and under the Settings > Wi-Fi tab it shows Wi-Fi "On". However when I click "Show available networks" nothing happens.

If I click "Change adapter options" it shows Wi-Fi "Not connected" and "Qualcomm QCA9565 802.11b/g/n Wireless Adapter". When I clicked "Diagnose this connection" it reset the wireless adapter but the Troubleshooter wasn't able to fix the problem.

Is this a definitive indication that the wi-fi hardware is *not* working, or is there some other way of testing this?

A slightly related question: I'd like to change the name of the Ethernet connection to avoid confusion with wi-fi. If I click "Rename this connection" it allows me to change "Ethernet" to something else, but that's not what I want to do. I want to rename the network. Is there a way to do this or possibly "forget" and re-establish an ethernet network similar to what one can do with wi-fi?

    Thanks again!

Unable to print to a network printer when connected to both wireless and wired networks

    Hi Eileen,

    • As far as i'm aware nothing has changed
    • i have only tried to send test pages to the network printer so im assuming so yes
    • wireless printer works fine when connected to both networks. However the wifi doesn't connect auto when an Ethernet connection is established this has to be manually connected.
    I have tried the following:

    • updated the print driver
    • changed the network port it was plugged into
    • ran windows updates
    • configured with a static
    • changed the wifi and Ethernet priority
I will run through the trouble shoot steps as suggest and come back to you.

FYI - he has a number of extenders dotted around, a collegue mentioned it could be a subnet issue?

    thanks, Ben
