Unable to get Sound properly when playing Windows XP games in Windows 10

I recently copied a games folder from my old Windows XP system to my Windows 10 system. I can't find my original disc for the games, which was called 40 Games, so I was not able to do an official install using the CD. However, the games run OK (each game has its own exe file) except for the sound. Some of the sounds work, but most do not. The folder has a lot of .wav files in it, which I can play directly using Windows Media Player. But when the games.exe is running, (which is the master file which then calls a specific game I select to play) some sounds play but most do not.

Anyone have any ideas why I can manually play the .wav file, but the executable that would try to play that sound fails? Thanks for any thoughts.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Unable to play sound in Windows 10

    Hi Larry,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Let’s try below steps and check if it helps:

    • Press (Windows + X) and select
      control panel

    • Click on the Sound icon.

    • Under play back devices, right click on an empty area and place a check mark on “Show Disabled Devices” and “Show disconnected Devices.

    • You will now see the disabled audio devices with the arrow pointing down on them.

    • Right click on each listed disabled audio device that you want to enable, click on
Enable and set it as default.

    • Click OK to close the Sound window.

    • Restart the computer and check the result.
If the issue persists you can try the below steps and check if it helps:

Check if any of the sound items in the device manager is disabled. If yes, then enable it. To do this, try these steps.

    • Go to Device manager.

    • Expand Sound, video and game controllers’ item.

    • Right click the sub sound items and click
      enable.

    • Restart the computer and check the result.
I suggest you to run the hardware and sound troubleshooter
    and check if it helps.

    • Type “Troubleshoot” without quotes in search and click on
Troubleshooting in the results displayed on the left side of the screen.

    • In the new window, click
      Hardware and Sound
      .

    • In the list of options, click on
      Hardware and Devices.

    • Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.
Hope it helps. Please reply to us with the status of the issue.
