  1. Unable to initiate Remote Desktop into other systems

I support a number of staff members and have about 8 identical laptops that I've set up over the past 6 months mostly with no issues.

System specs: Dell Inspiron 14 5000 system info: Inspiron 5481, running Win10 Home, build 1909, 18363.720

This one laptop would not allow me to Remote Desktop into other systems from day one. It tries to RDP in for a long while and eventually gives a typical error as if the remote computer was turned off or not ping-able on the network Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons: ...with the typical 3 reasons. I've tried the computer name, FQDN, and IP address IP address is ping-able to no avail.

After I initially set up a few programs for users and then encountered the RDP error, I used the Restore settings to "Reset" the computer to Factory settings, wiping all programs off, etc. When I re-install my VPN, I still have the same RDP issues. The VPN should not be causing issues, as when I'm at the office with the laptop and have no need to VPN, I still cannot RDP to systems in our office. After a VPN or in office, I can ping the system I'd like to RDP into, and I can RDP from other systems into those systems just fine.

The system has been sitting for a couple months and I just turned it on again, ran all the Windows updates in case i had forgotten that before, and upgraded to build 1909 detailed build info above, just to make sure that was not causing an issue. Then re-installed everything with the same results.

Any idea what might be going on?

    Matt

  2. Windows 10 - Remote Desktop

    Hi,

We will surely assist you with the issue you are facing with Windows 10.
    - Which version of Windows 10 Operating System are you using?

    - Were you able to upgrade to Windows 10 successfully?

I suggest you to refer the below steps and see if this helps.

    • Enable remote desktop in settings
      • Control Panel\System and Security\System, Click "Remote Settings" on the left side

    • Verify my port forwarding settings were properly forwarding to my computers local IP address
      • run "cmd.exe" and then type "ipconfig". Find your IP from that list
    [*]
    • Make sure your firewall settings are open
    • Go to "Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall\Allowed apps"
    • On the left, click "Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall"
    • Click "Change Settings"
    • Find "Remote Desktop" in the list and make sure both "Private" and "Public" is checked.

Let us know if this helps.

    Thank you.

  3. remote desktop

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Please help me with the below details to understand your issue in a better way:

    1. Are you using the Microsoft remote desktop app?

If you are using the Microsoft remote desktop app downloaded from
Microsoft store then, I suggest you to follow the steps to
fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store
    .

If the issue still persists with the Microsoft remote desktop app, then you can contact the support team by going to the

    link
and scrolling down to the bottom and clicking on
Microsoft remote desktop support under the Publisher info.

However, if you are using the Remote desktop connection, which comes pre-installed with Windows 10, then I suggest you to please post your question in the
    TechNet forum.

    Hope it helps.
