Windows 10: Unable to link my Windows license to MS Account

I bought a Windows 11 Pro license today from Microsoft and received the product key in email.I installed a fresh copy of Win11 Pro with this key but when I open Activation settings, it shows “Windows is activated.” instead of “Windows is activated using a license linked to this Microsoft account” even after I serup my pc with a MS account.Does this mean I have to enter the product key each time I reinstall windows ?And can this license be transferred if I change my PC/make significant hardware changes ?

Linking Windows license with MS account - What does it do?

There's a nice and practical workaround for this.

When signed in to Windows with your local account, open any native Windows UWP app. I often use Weather app for this. Sign in to app with a Microsoft account (screenshots from Weather app):





When you have entered your MS account email, password and in case you are using two-step authentication, the verification code, click Next to add this MS account to Windows although still keeping your local account as a sign-in account:





This does not switch your Windows 10 local account to a Microsoft account. You will continue signing in to Windows with your a local account but you have now set Windows to automatically sign in to all Microsoft apps with the MS account email. Activation will now be connected to your MS account:





This allows you to transfer the license after hardware change.

Digital License (Windows Home 10) link to MS Account

After a new motherboard was installed, Windows 10 Home is activated with digital license, but it won't link to MS Account. Unable to sign in to MS from device, however able to open MS account through browser. Continue to receive "oops something went wrong message". I have changed passwords of windows and MS to no avail. Can't download MS Help App as the log-in fails. Also unable to log into MS store through device (receive error message not connected to internet), however wifi and/or ethernet is connected.
