Windows 10: Unable to load build 10162, error 0x800705b4

I successfully installed build 10159 when it came out (the prior builds were also successfully installed); however, when I tried to download 10162, the download appeared to be successful, but the install step failed, giving me the 0x800705b4 error message.

I checked the $Windows.~BT subdirectory and the only large file was WindowsOld.wim which was downloaded on July 1st. There was no ESD file in the subdirectory. The .wim file was the latest; no files were dated with today's date..

My platform is a Dell OptiPlex 745. It was stock OEM when I got it, but I've increased the RAM to 8GB, replaced the DVD/CD drive with a newly purchased LG M-DISK "super multi" drive, added a WiFi adapter, and added a NVidia GeForce 8400GS (I'm running three displays on the machine). Performance has been acceptable with the new configuration.

What are my next steps?

Hi,

I am having Problems on updates. I am on Windows 10 Build 10162 Home. I got a update to build 10547, but every time i always get this error code: 0x800705b4.
My Widnows Licence is going to expire on Oct. 1. I dont want to do anything else to fix this because im scared that i might do something that might cause trouble to my PC.

Please Help!!

Just for giggles try updating Windows Defender first and then try running the update again... You could also try disabling it completely and then installing it. This isn't the first build users have had this issue on and oding those 2 things are ways that others were able to get around the issue *Biggrin

 

Try it from the ISO? Download Windows 10 Insider Preview ISO

You can burn a DVD, create a install flash drive with Rufus or just mount the iso from a booted Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 system and run setup.exe.

 

This would also work if you don't want to mess around with defender/update *Tongue

 

I successfully downloaded the .iso file for 10162 and burned it to a DVD. I tested the DVD and it booted from a cold start and the expected messages appeared.

Since I have a Windows 7 on the machine plus a blank partition plus an old partition (which is for, I assume, some Dell diagnostics + a Windows XP emergency restart), I plan to use DBan to wipe the disk clean and start over. If anyone thinks that is a stupid approach, please let me know ASAP {<o

It's a fine plan IF you have a backup of your machine.

So, if I have a system recovery disk burned on a DVD and a Windows Image backup on an external, I should be good to go? Correct? This is an 11-year-old machine, so I doubt that there is anything in that System Reserve partition that would help in case of a boot failure.

For what it is worth, I spent a half-hour on the phone with Dell support. I think the young lady was flummoxed. She knew the machine was WAY out of warranty, but still kept digging. In the end, she wasn't much help. But it does show that some companies provide very extended support. Three cheers for Dell.

You might want to run Windows Update Troubleshooter in Control panel to see if that clears up the 0x800705b4 error.

Other things to try:

In an elevated Command Prompt (right click, select Run as Administrator ...) type the following commands
SFC /ScanNow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
If there are no errors, then you're golden. If errors were repaired, you're golden.

Try to get the build through Windows Update.

Or ... go with your wipe and install plan.

 

IMHO, it's a little early in the game to build a recovery DVD + Image Backup. Maybe in a couple of weeks after RTM. I'm doing no serious work on this platform -- just testing various software packages to make sure they are working.

However, and ideas on appropriate Virus protection. I am a "safe" web users, staying away from gambling, pron, font downloads, on-line games, and other know virus havens, but I just can't get a handle on what, if any, virus protection comes with 10166. Ideas?

 

Ok, it's hard to tell what members have on their machine, so the backup is usually offered as a precaution to prevent data loss.

MS Defender comes with Win10 - it is the rebranded MS Security Essentials (full real-time protection), not the ancillary Defender of previous Windows. It is a good product that other vendors use to benchmark their products. There isn't much user interaction required, except for an occasional notification to scan. There aren't periodic scheduled scans from the user standpoint, it is real-time protection.

Many OEM AV vendors are catching up to Windows 10 - they waited for it to get closer to RTM before applying resources to something that was bound to change.

For the Preview, it's best to use Defender - I suggest waiting until research proves other AV products have fully completed their transition to a Win10 version. A number AV products are notorious after a major change - either the code or the definitions cause issues, sometime major.
