Windows 10: Unable to open any excel 2016 or other programs in suite - error 0cx0000142

Hi all,


I received an automatic windows update this morning. I'm assuming it failed to do what it intended as it returns the 0cx0000142 error. Excel worked fine the previous day, the error has only occurred this morning. Word was working earlier in week. It affects the others in the Windows suite as well. I tried using the Community forum and found some information, but I'm not tech savvy enough to action them. I been through windows start but can't find a way to reach the command line.


But I did find where my latest updated were applied and had these


Feature Update to Windows 10, Version 2004


August 11, 2020-KB4569745 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 2004 successfully installed 22-Aug-2020


Security Update for Adobe Flash Player: June 9, 2020successfully installed 22-Aug-2020


Should I try uninstalling these?


I'd appreciate some assistance that and old person like me could follow and apply. I had to use the one-off code to access as all my passwords are in a password protected excel spreadsheet.

Unable to open Excel or Word

I am unable to open a specific Excel File or Excel or Word at all. It shows and error message (-2147163890). Any suggestions

Since the above troubleshooting steps did not change anything, what we can do here is to refresh both of the apps that might be the cause of this error.

We recommend that you uninstall and reinstall both the Adobe and the Excel application. To uninstall Excel, kindly follow the steps provided on the link below:

Uninstall Office from a PC

Moreover, to uninstall Adobe reader, kindly follow the steps below:

• 
  On the Start menu, select Settings.
  
• 
  Select Apps.
  
• 
  Select the program, and then select Uninstall. Some apps built into Windows can't be uninstalled.
  
• 
  Follow the instructions on the screen.
  

Once uninstalled, kindly reinstall the program again and check if the issue persists.

Excel isn't opening properly

Does the error pop up as soon as you click on the Excel program to open or once the Excel is opened?

Try the steps below and check if it helps:

Step 1:

Try to open Excel in safe mode and check if it opens:

· Hold Windows key + R.

· Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

Excel /safe

Note: There is space between Excel and/

If the issue does not occur in Excel safe, then try to disable add-ins associated with Excel 2013 and check the result.

· Click on File menu, Options and then Add-ins.

· Click on Go button besides Manage: Com-in Add.

· Check if there are add-ins listed, clear the checkbox to disable them.

Step 2:

If the above step fails, try the step below:

Right click on Excel (.exe) > Properties > Compatibility > uncheck all the boxes, click Ok and check if it helps.

To access Excel (.exe), open the following location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\Excel.exe

Or

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\Root\Office15\Excel.exe

Try to open Excel and check if it opens.
