Windows 10: Unable to open documents from the search bar.

When I search for an item in my search bar, once found, I'm unable to open it directly. I have to go to the file folder it's in and open it from there. This has never been an issue until today. Occasionally, I will get a pop up that tells me I don't have permission to open the file.


What do I do to correct this?

Cortana/search bar not opening

I'm unsure how to bring up the command prompt without the search. I do not see the CMD option in complete list and of course the search bar is what we're troubleshooting.

From the description, I understand that you are still receiving the pop up notifications, despite having disabled the search functionality in windows 10.

Steps to disable the Search Bar

• Right click on the task bar.
• Select the "Search" option.
• Select "Disable."

However, if the above steps don't work out, perform the below suggested steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Open a CMD window started as Administrator.

Repair corruption: Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.

Run this command next: Sfc /scannow

Now run these two commands:

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Can't search from the task bar

When searching anything in the Cortana search bar, related applications, documents, will appear above Cortana. However, it will offer to search the web if there are no matches found. To assist you better, we'd like to verify the following:

• Is there a list showing at the top of the Cortana search bar when you type? For example, Microsoft Edge.
• After upgrading your Windows 10, did you check for Windows Updates? Upgrading/Updating your operating system does not automatically update drivers, programs, and other applications.
• Which version or build of Windows device are you using? To know, press
  Windows + R to open the Run window. Type
  winver and press Enter. A new window will open showing the version and build number of your Windows device.
• To avoid repetition, can you provide us with all the troubleshooting steps that you've done so far?
