Windows 10: Unable to open either Office applications or any documents related. Persistent 'Windows...

Suddenly this morning we find that all office applications will not open and related files, even though they are present and we can navigate to them, will not open. When we click on a given file, we get the error 'Windows cannot find C:\Users\<user account>\<file location>, even though the file we are trying to open is in that very location that Windows says it cannot find!


This only happens for Office files. I have a registered version of MS Office version ID: 18.2005.1191.0 and I have tried uninstalling & re-installing.


All help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the tip! I followed all above steps.

So far I can open files from the Recent files list when I enter Word itself, however I still am unable to open any documents using the Word icon pinned to the taskbar:

He already did that. The list of what the OP tried is long and it includes pretty much everything I'm aware of *Sad

How about temporary disable AV and any antiransomware product, and run Office repair again?

Edit: just now have i finished reading the part of the post describing how you deleted Windows.old.
This could be related. Normally, Windows doesn't need that old installation, but in some cases, some files could be needed..


Try with Repair install of the Windows.

 

Links in Open Office documents doesn’t connect to web

I understand that links created in Open Office documents doesn’t connect to Web. However, it would be great if you can help us with the details requested below:

• What happens when you click on the links in Open Office document?
  
• Do you receive any error message/code? If yes, what is the error message/code?
  
• Which browser are you using as default?
  

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to refer the articles on
Using hyperlinks and
Hyperlinks and URLs and see if that helps.



You may also want to try resetting the file association for HTTP and HTTPS files to default and see if that helps. Refer the steps mentioned below:

1. Press Windows Logo key + I, to open
   Settings.
   
2. Click on Apps and select
   Default apps from the left pane.
   
3. Click on Choose default apps by protocol.
   
4. Look for HTTP and HTTPS in the list and makes sure that the protocols are associated with
   Internet Explorer.
   
5. If you do not see Internet Explorer associated, click on the application name and select
   Internet Explorer from the list.
