Windows 10: Unable to open Excel File From Taskbar or Windows Explorer on Windows 10

Hello,

I am not sure whether this is an Office issue, or a Windows 10 issue I am guessing the latter.

I have Excel pinned to my taskbar, and typically right-click to get a list of my pinned Excel files, click on the file and open it.

Today, the same process launches excel, but would not open the file my pinned files have not been moved to a different location, where this could cause a problem.

Once Excel is launched, I can go to the file tab, and select the file from recently opened files, or pinned files and the file opens just fine.

Same issue occurs when trying to double-click a file in Windows Explorer. Excel application launches, but does open the file.

It seems as if when Windows 10 is involved in launching Excel, it does not pass the file information as a parameter to Excel.

But that is just a guess.

I am running Windows 10 Pro, Version 1903. I am running Office 2016 Pro.

I would appreciate any solutions to this issue which you may have.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

excel file causes instability in "windows explorer"

When I open an excel file by double clicking on the name in windows explorer, the file opens OK but at the same

time, the explorer file list jumps up and down as it lists and de-lists the

excel temp file. It is very distracting. I can close the explorer window or

simply change to another folder. It occurs only on one of my computers and only on some excel files

It happens only with excel files and not with word or acrobat

Any suggestions where to look for the problem. We've reinstalled Office 10 and reset my windows profile. nothing helped so far.

Try Ctrl+Esc.

If Recycle Bin is the only icon you can see, open it, from the explorer window navigate to Control Panel and find Taskbar settings there.
