Windows 10: Unable to open files with Gray X mark saved my on Win10 laptop

ello Friends, Please guide/ help with this issue. Initially, I had these files saved on my One Drive. Some time ago, I downloaded these files to my old Win-10 laptop I am not using OneDrive any longer. I just tried to access these files saved on my laptop, I see these files are now showing grey X and I'm unable to open any of these files. Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue ? Thank you for your help.

Gray X's on Desktop files appearing

Gray X's have recently started appearing on all of the files and folders I have placed on my Windows 10 desktop.





The X's are in the lower left corner of the icon.. They only appear on icons belonging to actual files or folders saved on the desktop. (Not on shortcuts to other locations.)

Examples would include: Excel files, PDF files, JPG files, folders actually residing on the desktop, text files, etc. The appearance of the "X's" have not interfered with my ability to access the files. This does NOT occur any place else (other folders on my hard drive, etc.) other than on the desktop.

Logging out as a User or rebooting does solve the issue for 1-2 minutes once I am logged back in, but then they reappear.

Doing a screen refresh does nothing. Right-clicking on the file (or folder) and resetting the default program to open the file (or folder) does nothing.

I have not recently installed any new back-up programs.

Deleting the Desktop DataBase in the Registry does not help.

Any suggestions or known solutions would be most appreciated!

We'd like to ask more information regarding the opening and saving files using programs:

• What are the troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
  
• Did you try using a different program to replicate this concern? If not, open notepad and type anything on it, then close it by clicking the red X mark. See if it will prompt you to save and select the save location to the desktop.
  
• Were there any recent changes or updates on your device?
  
• Is it an ongoing concern? If not, when did you last notice it was not saving?

Not that I have a solution to suggest, but I think it is interesting that only three of the eight files in your list have that gray X. Are you able to copy those files which do not have the X? That might lead to a clue as to how the files got created, etc.
