Unable to recover some files from USB backup - seems to be USMT and mig files involved

Hi, My computer wasn't working so the only option left was to perform a system restore by backing up the files/apps/settings to a USB drive and resetting Windows. Once this backup/resetting process was complete, when I logged back a bunch of files weren't repopulated back and the USB drive contained a folder called Do_Not_Delete, which in turn had a folder called USMT. Inside this USMT folder there was a folder called migstore, which in turn had three folders, called apps, files, and settings, and a file called USMTBackupHistory.XML. Inside each of the apps, files, and and settings folders the

MIG file - need to move

.mig files were created by Windows Easy Transfer or USMT.

Windows Easy Transfer was not included in Windows 10 and USMT is used to migrate large deployments in an enterprise setting. You can 'see' the .mig file in File Explorer but you can't do anything with it.

Trying to restore backup (.MIG file) in Windows 10

Didn't realize that .MIG files created by Easy Transfer in Widows 7 won't be usable in Windows 10, and I am stuck.

Can't restore anything from my old laptop, since I did a fresh install. And in turn was necessitated because Windows 10 refused to install as an upgrade over Windows 7. Kept crashing with a message "Something went wrong, please run setup.exe again".

And now this .MIG file problem, what a bummer indeed. And zinstall does not work on .MIG files. Any suggestions?

Hi, I had a similar problem when I did a factory reset on my HP pavilion which uses Vista. I used WET to backup my files to a USB flash drive and then found I couldn't restore them. I kept getting the message "please use the original device used to store
the files", or words to that effect. I then found a very useful program on this web site -- MIKE MORAWSKI | Programming & Tech Blog/2011/01/17/mig-recover-and-viewer-utility-alpha/.
This worked perfectly for me using Vista although it took quite some time.

Could be worth a try for you?

    Regards,

    Dave.
