Windows 10: Unable to Select Boot Drive in BIOS After Installing Windows 11 on Multiple SSDs

Basically I have a version of Windows 11 that I have been using on a Sata SSD, yesterday I got a new m.2 SSD that I mounted on the motherboard but did not detach the Sata SSD. I did a fresh installation of windows 11 on the Sata SSD since I had not formatted the pc for quite a while and because the m.2 SSD is about 6 times faster than my old Sata SSD. Now though, after installing windows 11 on the m.2 SSD, I am on the latter after choosing during the first boot after installing from USB, whether to run windows from the m.2 or the Sata. Unable to Boot to SSD after Windows 10 Install

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time read this, I will try to keep it short, but I have been struggling for a while with this and tried a lot of different things!

Computer Info:

• Windows 10 Home v.2004 Build 19041.450
  
• AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
  
• 32GB RAM
  
• Aorus Ultra Gaming X470 BIOS Version F30 (I have tried updating the BIOS with continued problems, so I stayed at this version)
  
• Windows currently installed on HDD Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-22BN5A0 (this one is super old thus the attempt to transition to a new SSD)
  
• I also have another HDD and SSD installed that I use for storage
  

Main Problem: I am unable to get my computer to boot to my Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD after installing Windows on it from the Media Creation Tool (I have also tried Rufus which ends up the same)

Prevailing Error Code: When I have just that SSD connected to the computer it will try to boot and give me the error message "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device"

The Process I have Followed:

1. Clean/Wipe SSD using diskpart
   
2. Shut down PC, disconnect power cord, hold power button
   
3. Disconnect all other drives, USBs, etc.
   
4. Boot to BIOS, which sees both the Media Creation Tool (MCT) and the SSD
   
   1. Disable CSM Support
      
   2. Disable Secure Boot
      
5. I have tried both setting the MCT and the SSD as the 1st Boot Priority, as well as going to the Boot Order Menu, and selecting the MCT from there
   
6. Once inside the Windows install, I have tried both 'New' when selecting the SSD, as well as simply hitting 'Next'. The MCT does the install no problem, but then when it says "Windows Needs to Restart to Complete the Installation" is when I have problems
   
   1. (interestingly the MCT only creates 3 Partitions on the SSD - does not create the 'Recovery' Partition)
      
7. PC will Reboot but go right back to the MCT
   
8. When I go back to the BIOS, the SSD is no longer "seen", if I simply remove the MCT flashdrive then I get the "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device" error
   

I will link forums that I have follow to the T. I have experience with computers so I do not skip steps or take shortcuts.

Automatic repair while booting from hdd and installing windows on ssd.

1. Migrated windows from hdd to ssd
   
2. Formatted hdd
   
3. Prioritised boot from ssd in bios
   
4. Turned on the pc
   
5. Automatic repair
   

To deal with this I select boot from a device > then EFI USB device > it says no bootable USB detected, select from these drives > there are few options including the newly installed ssd > I select ssd > then it shows disk checking, press any key to stop > I stop it > windows then boots from ssd.

It very difficult to repeat all this everytime I turn on my pc. Please suggest a fix.

 

Seemless transfer after SSD failure and bios dual-booting

I use Acronis True Image. Here are the steps for cloning a drive with it.

Physically install the drive you will be using for the backup.
Launch the application
Select "Tools and Utilities"
Under utilities select "Clone disk"
From the Clone Disk Wizard choose "Manual" -next-
Select the source disk. -next-
Select the destination disk. -next-
Continue following the steps to verify the partition sizes. -next-

You will be prompted that a reboot is required. -ok- The system will reboot and appear to be loading windows. Eventually it'll start the clone process. Once finished you will be prompted to press any key to shutdown the computer. -ok- and let the computer shut off.

This is important!At this point, unplug your SSD and power on the system, go into the BIOS, verify the new drive is the first boot device. Save and exit and allow Windows to boot from the backup drive. Everything work? Great. Now remove the backup and hide it in a safe place. Plug your SSDs back in and verify your boot order again, save, and away you go.

I always check the BIOS to make sure the boot orders are ok because 90% of the boards I've owned keep moving drive orders any time I add or remove a drive.

DO NOT BOOT THE SYSTEM WITH BOTH DRIVES INSTALLED!!!

Windows will break the original if you boot off the backup and it'll break the backup if you boot off the original. DO NOT boot the system with both drives connected!!

This is how I've been making backups since '09. I haven't lost my data yet.
