Windows 10: Unable to sign in 12 year old family member: You must be online the first time to complete...

Older 5 years Toshiba Laptop running Windows 10 version 1709.


I am the adult - I've signed in with my Microsoft account. I've added a family member, indicated he's a child. Checked off the button to allow him to sign into the computer.


So when the computer starts up, I see my account and the child's account to choose from. When I click on my account, I have set it up to accept PIN, then windows starts as normal.


BUT when I click on child's account, I get the error message, "You must be online the first time to complete your account setup". To be clear, I am online. The online symbol displays on the lower right. I plugged in an Ethernet cable directly as well but get the same error - so I do have internet connectivity.


I've logged onto Microsoft Families website - the child's profile is all set up there.


As a last ditch effort, I added the child account to another laptop and on that laptop, it allowed me to sign in to the child's account, complete setup, set up a PIN, etc. I hoped that would resolve the problem on the original laptop but no luck, I'm getting the same error message. Any ideas on what may be causing this would be appreciated, as I'm trying to set up a kid-friendly laptop for remote schooling. Thank you!

broken "family member needs to sign in"

Parental controls stopped working. Family.Microsoft.com has alert: "Your family member needs to sign in to their Windows 10 device AngLaptop2014 for family features to work.

But the "how to fix this" says

• Select Accounts > Family & other people
• Under Your family, select your family member, then select Allow
• Have your family member sign in with their Microsoft account if asked to

And the steps don't apply. The account is already allowed, and there is no option to change that.

Now what???

 

Web Blocking for an 8 Year Old

Your suggestions have not solved my problem yet. But, I first have a more basic problem.

I went to the suggested site and then set up an account for my 8 year old son and signed him up for an email account as a family member. I received an email welcoming him to the family and he shows up in my family list. I turned on the age appropriate
restrictions and listed cnn.com to block. when I go to his account, there are no restrictions at all. I can get to cnn.com and I can go to sites about **** for teens. What am I doing wrong? Is thee a setting I am missing?
