Windows 10: Unable to sign in after switching to live account

I originally configured my user account on my laptop Lenovo Yoga 7 14ITL5 to be an offline account, with no linked live account. However the other day I rented a film from the windows store and to my surprise was now required to sign in with a live account to the films & TV app to be able to playback the rented film. Reluctantly I proceeded, thinking this would just be logging into the app with this account, rather than converting my entire windows account but that is what happened. I cancelled the process once this became clear and was forced to restart the laptop by the installer.


After restarting the laptop I found that my username was now replaced by my live account email address, and I was now unable to login.


When trying to login the only options presented were to scan a fingerprint or to use a PIN. The fingerprint option returned a message stating that no fingerprints had been configured despite me regularly using fingerprints for login with my local account. Using the PIN option did not fare much better, I tried entering my old PIN, which took a long time to process before returning an error that the credentials could not be verified status 0xc000006d, substatus: 0xc000005e, and was directed to try a different login mode as already stated PIN was the only available mode or to set up a PIN.


Clicking the set up pin option opened a window to log into a live account, and verify with an email code. After entering the code I was prompted with a confirmation message warning that there could be data loss from resetting a PIN. Upon confirming and proceeding another error was returned: Something went wrong - we weren't able to set up your PIN. With the options to retry or skip.


Retrying returned the same error, and skipping returned to the login screen where PIN was still the only option.


I am assuming the user account was corrupted in some way, it would be great if I could return to the original local account but if the only way to avoid reinstalling windows is to use the live account I can do that and reinstall later whenever convenient. Thanks in advance for any help.

1. Which accounts are you unable to sign in to?
2. What happens when you try to sign in to your account?
3. Are you seeing any error messages when you try to sign in to your PC?

If you are referring to the Microsoft account and if your Microsoft account has been compromised, it means that someone might be using your account to access your personal info or send spam. I suggest use the following guide to
get back into your account, review your personal info and settings, and help prevent this from happening again. Refer the article on

How to access a compromised Microsoft account and try to reset your password. If the issue still persists you can follow the remaining steps mentioned in the article and check if that helps.

Switch laptop sign in from MS account to Local Account questions

Hi, Ive just switched from signing in to my laptop with a Microsoft Account to signing in with a Local Account instead. My laptop was always listed as a Device on the opening screen along with a map showing its location when I looked in my Microsoft Account. Under Devices I could also view my laptop along with other bits of various information about the device and its location was always shown on a map there too. After signing into my laptop with my Local Account ..If I sign in separately to my Microsoft Account afterwards Ive just noticed that having switched to a Local Account my laptop isnt shown on the opening Microsoft Account screen anymore and its not listed in devices either. Is this normal behaviour? I was expecting to still find my laptop listed in Devices. Also...Under Update and Security/Activation..it used to say Digital Licence linked to a Microsoft Account. Now it just says Windows is Activated with a digital licence. Is all this normal behaviour if you sign into a laptop with a Local Account instead of a Microsoft Account?
