Unable to upgrade 14393.1358 to 15063.413

I've been trying for several days to update my Toshiba Laptop, Quad Core, 8GB Ram, 750GB HDD to Creators Update. Tried several dozen times by now with all attempts failing. I've tried going through Windows Update which uses the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant and I've also tried using the Media Creation Tool. In both cases, the failure occurs at about the 90% mark of "Getting Computer Ready". Message is "Update has failed error code 0X800700c1". The usual cryptic MS error code is no help whatever.

I've also tried downloading my own ISO file and installing manually. The ISO download fails at about the 33% mark of "Installing". It simply says "Windows 10 Install Has Failed" and gives no message or error code.

I have tried the following remedies all to no avail:

    1. Ran System File Checker which finds some corrupted files but unable to fix all. A typical SFC message.

    2. Tried DISM with various commands and could never even get it to work.

    3. Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter which says it found 4 problems but fixed them all.

    4. During the many attempts at installation, I sometime chose to download updates now and sometimes chose download updates later in case that was a problem.

    5. Tried a clean boot installation.

    6. Even tried to Install in Safe Mode but Windows wouldn't allow that at all.

If anyone has stuck with me so far, any ideas?

The computer runs exceptionally well normally with 14393 and it is my preferred machine even though I have 2 other laptops with 15063 that upgraded with no problems and my Insiders laptop, with 16232.

  2. Upgrade Continually Fails--14393.1358 to 15063.413

Sadly, Alex, your fix didn't work for me. I tried it twice with same result as all other tries over the last several days. It fails at 33% Installed.

Thanks very much for your help.

  4. Unable to upgrade 14393.1358 to 15063.413

    Hi C.B.

Sometimes you have to run SFC up to three times to correct issues.

You didn't say what model of machine you have or what you may have done in BIOS. Modern devices have two settings that need to be addressed. When running from Media Creation tool you need to disable Secure Boot and Fast boot in the BIOS.

Thanks for your response and advice, Ken. No problem with the BIOS and I'm currently running SFC several times as you suggest. If that doesn't work, I believe I will try a repair install of current version 14393 and then try again to upgrade to 15063.

Try HeiDoc.net's Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool, inside of which you can specify exactly which version of which ISO you want to grab, all the way back to Windows 7 stuff (and including all major releases of Windows 10).

Unable to upgrade 14393.1358 to 15063.413

Thanks very much, Ed. I'm downloading the March, 2016 version of 1607 right now. Tried for the March, 2017 version but couldn't DL for some reason. My plan is to install that and then try again to update to Creators Update. I have a current full Macrum backup of current 14393.1358 just in case.

    I greatly appreciate your help.

Would you believe??? The darn ISO of Version 1607 from March of 2016 also failed at the same point in installation--33%. No matter what I do, updates and ISO's all fail at that point. I'm flummoxed!!!

Unfortunately, sometimes the Windows installation just breaks and will refuse to upgrade. A clean install fixes it and usually will go for at least two or three major upgrades after that.

Unfortunately, CDR, I think you're right. However, the current Build, 14393-1358, is the most stable and speedy OS that I have ever had the pleasure of using and I've been through them all starting with MS-DOS in the early 1980's. I know of nothing in Creator's Update that will be of use to me personally that is not already there but I just thought I would go to Creator's Update to stay up to date. I do have other machines that updated to Creator's Update without incident plus my Insiders machine now at 16232.

I will be 90 years old next year so I think I'll just stick with my current excellent working system and hope that MS supports it as long as I'm likely to be using it.

Thanks a lot for your post.
