Windows 10: Unable to upgrade to Win 10 from Win 8.1 due to error VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (related to AMD...

I had already upgraded from Win8.1 to Win10 on my Dell Inspiron 15R laptop longtime back but after a couple of years, my harddrive started giving issues due to formation of bad clusters on it because of which I got it replaced with a new one. Now, when I try to install Win10 over it, I am repeatedly getting VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE error (due to AMD Radeon graphic card) and therefore, unable to complete the installation. As I understand, Windows activation will not be a problem as installation will pick the key from the BIOS.


Moreover, when I installed Win 8.1, it got installed successfully but again, I am unable to upgrade to Win 10 from 8.1 as well owing to the same error. Upgrade gets stuck everytime due to this error.


Please suggest a resolution for this problem. Thanks!

I guess that's two of us with magic Windows 8 upgrade disks. *Laugh :laugh:

Jessen P -- Thanks for responding. I looked at the link you provided, but it just provides a small list of error codes and possible causes for the error. Didn't see any steps to take to resolve the issue. And none of the listed error codes are the
same as the one I got 0x80070006-0x90016 when I tried to upgrade to win 10.

 

Unable to Activate Win 8

I got Win 8 isntalled on my file server, but I am unable to activate it with the key. Says the key is invalid. Since I work at microsoft I got a retail version from the employee store. I have been doing some reading, and to be able to activate Win8 with the key there needs to be a previous version of Windows installed for it to work. WTF, so you can't do clean installs?

And the box says nothing about Upgrade version. Straight Windows 8 Pro.
