Unable to upgrade Windows 10 from build 10240 to 10586

Since the beginning of 2016 I have been unable to upgrade ending with constant requests to restart and the failure data as per attachment is the latest.

I did defer this upgrade but recently it has been ignored and the upgrade has been installing and failing again on a regular basis.

I have tried the ISO's and other links to this upgrade and they all finish with a simple statement "Failed". Funnily in Security & Maintenance it shows a failure almost as soon as it starts to download and then about an hour later it says it was a successful update. I expect to see a Windows.old in 'C' drive but there isn't any.

Last night a notification suddenly announced "We are working on it!" - what? Today it did another upgrade download and installation and guess what - failed.

I am under the impression that Microsoft want to get this upgrade going in preparation for the Windows 10 anniversary end July 2016.

I notice in Tiribos's post the instructions for downloading the ISO and mounting etc, but mine downloads as zip file but I suppose it all amounts to the same performance.

    What to do?

This forum seems to be the best place to post as there is so much useless crap elsewhere on the internet mostly from a year or more ago.

    :)

  2. 10.0 Pro (Build 10240) ... How update to 14251 now???

Build 14251 is a Windows 10 Insider Preview version and not an upgrade from Build 10240. The normal upgrade from Build 10240 is Build 10586.

This problem is more common than certain people here are willing to admit.

Depending on which reply you were trying to use.
I gave Tiribos my reply as follow and mine does not involve zip files........................

Use the Tech Bench link to download your version of Windows 10
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...brrWLRbagYCa0w

Scroll down to Select Edition > click the pointer at the right and select your edition of Windows 10 > click Confirm.
    ( ***
note : unless your Win 10 is of N, or KN or Single Language version, you should select Windows 10 which is first one on the list. It contains both the Home and the Pro edition.)

Click the pointer and select Language > make sure you pick the same language the computer is now running > click Confirm
Select the bit version, 32 or 64-bit. Make sure you select the same bit version as the computer is now running.
At the bottom, click the pointer next to Save > click Save As > navigate to a folder of your choice > click the chosen folder > click Save
The iso will start downloading to your chosen folder.
When it is done, go to that folder > open the folder > right click at the iso file > click Mount > click Setup.exe
    Installation will begin.
It will allow you to keep you files, settings and apps.
    No product key is required.
    Activation will be automatic.

My WinZip seems to dominate downloads - I can Save As to a folder as shown in the attachment. Whichever way it produces a WinZip folder with an .exe. What follows is an upgrade that goes through all the motions and then at the last moment fails that I have already experienced many times.

I have also produced a USB key with the Tech Bench ISO. I boot from it and go through the upgrade motions. Then a compatibility report screen comes up with, quote: The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and re-start your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and re-start the upgrade.

The last part I do not understand - how do I start the upgrade? If it's another reboot then the procedure described in the previous paragraph is repeated. Opening the files on the key shows a setup application - this takes me to upgrade procedures leading to failure.

    DON'T boot from the USB.
    Instead ......................
Login to your computer > insert your USB key with the Tech Bench ISO > open it > do you see the iso file ?
If yes, RIGHT click at it > click Mount > click Setup.exe.

Try downloading the ISO this way

    Answer the questions and confirm
then click the bit depth of your machine

Unable to upgrade Windows 10 from build 10240 to 10586 [IMG]

You get a save dialog window

Unable to upgrade Windows 10 from build 10240 to 10586 [IMG]

Make note of the folder it will be saved,
    Hit the save button

    When the save completes
Double click the ISO in the folder you downloaded it

This mounts the image - looks like a DVD drive in File Explorer > This PC
    Navigate to that drive
    Launch setup

Yes I have tried the setup many times and get a convincing performance which ends with a little white square with simply The Installation Has Failed, with no reason. One of the last reports that is supposed to go to Microsoft is in the attachment with my first post.

    RIGHT:Left click > Save

    !!! Link EXPIRED !!!
Link is only valid for 24 hours - it expires at 00:47 EDT on June 3
It is the Techbench ISO: Win10 Nov 2015 English x64
If that does not match your installed version of Windows 10 (language, bit-depth) then don't bother downloading it.

If WinZip truly is preventing you from downloading a file in it's native format, then I suggest that you uninstall Winzip.

7-zip is an excellent tool to replace the function of WinZip
    Download .exe 64-bit x64 7-Zip for 64-bit Windows x64 (Intel 64 or AMD64)

Please follow this tutorial to provide the current operating environment of your machine.
Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

I'd also like to see your Disk Management.

Step 1: Download this zip file (contains dmDskmgr-vd.mmc)

    dmDskmgr-vd.zip
Step 2: Double click dmDskmgr-vd.zip to open the compressed folder
Double click dmDskmgr-vd.mmc to launch the custom Disk Management console
You'll get an output similar to this:

Unable to upgrade Windows 10 from build 10240 to 10586 [IMG]

Press Alt+PrtScn to grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image
Attach the image to a new post.
Option 2: Use Disk Management in the x-Menu (right click the Windows logo, select Disk Management)
Select View > Bottom > Disk list
Maximize the window and grab the screen shot.

    Thanks

In the end I had to resort to a clean install of W10 10586 from an ISO I downloaded to a USB drive. Probably as well to get rid of some baggage but unfortunately seemingly endless hours reinstalling MS Office and loads of other things.
