Unanswered Problems with Windows 10 Upgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro x64

I've always found the 7/8/10 tutorials is a great source to customize Windows. This type of functionality was once provided by Microsoft in TweakUI.

With release 1511, I ran into a slew of unrecoverable problems as documented at Unanswered Problems with Windows 10 Upgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro x64 forcing me back to 8.1.
With the Anniversary Update I again did a clean install. While installing my software I was careful to take many restore points and backups. The OS remained functioning until I installed the list of customization I downloaded from Windows 10 Tutorials. IF you read the cited post (above) you will see that restoring restore points or restoring files applets do no function. You even lose the ability to backup. I discovered if you boot from the installation DVD, the restore points are visible, even though they are not visible from within Windows. I was able to recover from the restore point I made just prior to running the Windows 10 Tutorials customizations..

I did not isolate which downloaded customization breaks Windows 10, but you will see a list (below) of what I downloaded. When I download an Enable..., I also download the disable..., so nearly half of these were not used. I list these downloaded customizations in hopes that the original poster can verify that the customization still works in the Anniversary Update and that it does not break Windows 10.

I subsequently found that most of these customizations were not necessary because the Anniversary Update provides the ability to make customizations.

  2. Hyper-V causing boot loop in Windows 10 Pro x64

After upgrading to Windows 10 x64 Pro from Windows 8.1 x64 Pro and activating Hyper-V in Windows 10 x64 Pro my computer reboots. After a couple of tries it goes in automatic repair and attempts to repair the startup. This cycle just repeats itself.
I tried many combinations of things in the bios, shutting down, reseting the defaults in bios and nothing has worked so far. I rolled back to Windows 8.1 Pro and Hyper-V works fine. I use Hyper-V with the emulators for phone and tablets in Visual Studio
2013 and 2015. Re installed the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and activated Hyper-V and same reboot loop occurs. The only way I can boot into Windows 10 x64 Pro is disable Virtualization in bios. Anyone else having similar problems with hyper-V on Windows
    10 x64 Pro?

    Thanks for your help?

Cannot burn DVDs after upgrading to Windows 10 Pro x64bit. Please help.

I already upgraded my Dell Vostro 5560 into Windows 10 Pro x64 from Windows 8.1 Pro x64 in the evening of 29th July 2015 from Myanmar.

Two days after upgrade, 31st July, I tried to burn Windows 10 ISO image onto DVD and I can't burn from both Windows built-in tool and Nero.

My DVD drive works perfectly with Windows 8.1 Pro and also I can read CD, DVD and write CD and DVD in Windows 8.1 Pro. I think the problem is with the upgrade of Windows 10 and I don't want to downgrade it also. My DVD drive is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GUA0N.

Is there any possible upgrade to my DVD drive?

    Firmware?

    Drivers?

Please help. Please find and give me the latest upgrade firmware or drivers for my DVD drive. Thanks.

Unanswered Problems with Windows 10 Upgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro x64

    Hello Michael,

I'm not sure what you may have done, but downloads in our tutorials here are 100% safe if used for what they are intended for. They use the same methods provided by Windows 10, but just provide different ways to do the same to make it easier to apply.

If you have anything specific that you had an issue with, then I would like to hear about it.

  5. System Restore does not backup the whole registry, you have to do it yourself, especially when playing with reg tweaks.

My tweaks are way more dangerous, by looking at the listed ones, they are harmless, it must have been something else.

I have always found the tutorials to be safe, until now. I took very good notes at each step, but I did not check the integrity of the OS between applying each Windows 10 Tutorials customizations. I had 100% confidence that the customizations were benign.

    • I build the Windows 10 Professional x64 Anniversary Update on a clean machine. Along the way I'm backups, create Restore Points, and check the Event Log.
    • Create a named Restore Point, and another backup.
    • I apply a subset of the Windows 10 Tutorials downloads I listed.
    • I attempt to create another Restore Point, but the System > System Protection tab errors out. The Backup/Restore applet errors out. Event log errors out and shows zero events logged. DISM to restore health errors out. More problems exist as listed on my TechNet posting URL.

I took detailed notes throughout the build process. The only activity was my applying a subset of Windows 10 Tutorials I listed. Windows Update is not running either. It was easy enough to boot from the install CD and back out from that named Restore Point I took just prior to starting to apply the Windows 10 Tutorials customization downloads. I was prepared to do a full metal restore but that wasn't needed for the recovery.

I don't see anything that you had listed that would have caused the issues you are describing.

Do you have a 3rd party AV or security program installed that may have interfered with system restore?

Can you provide the exact error message you got from system protection?

I don't recognize the ones below that you had listed. Did you get these from somewhere else?
    • Glass 1.0.1
    • p95v289.win64
    • CrystalDiskMark3_0_4Shizuku.zip
    • Fix HD4060 Scaling on Win10.reg
