  1. Unattended Windows 10 questions (software, updates, computer name)

    Hi,

i am playing around trying around with different ways to unattend a Windows 10 installation and there's some stuff i don't get to work or get confused about.

So basically i got a Windows 10 x64 Pro, and i have an "autounattend.xml" which auto formats, skips OOBE and sets up 2 local accounts.
This works great and basically the xml file does all the work.

Now if i want to install some software/updates as well as change computer name i have to use the 2 step method which from my understanding is that you have the "autounattend.xml" just do the format/install part, then you go into Audit Mode, install whatever you want, set a "unattend.xml" in the sysprep folder with the rest of the steps (local accounts etc) then disk clean and generalize/shutdown.

    Is that correct?
It seems to work, though the file becomes quite a bit larger, far larger than what the installed softwares should cause.
I don't really get which stuff i should set in what ".xml" file here though, it's a bit confusing, like the "Copy Profile" setting for example.

As for the computer name, i am a bit lost there, if possible i would like it to prompt the user when the installation begins so the user doesn't have to care afterwards, once the installation is done it's all fine and dandy.
But from what i can gather that doesn't seem to be possible, so the second option is to have it auto logon after the installation is done, run a script that asks for the computer name, and then restarts and doesn't autologon anymore.

I can't seem to get that part to work at all, i get many different methods on how to achieve this.
Some points to the "C:/Windows/Setup/Scripts/SetupComplete.cmd" but i can't really make it do much, not even sure if it runs.
Others points to the "RunOnce" for the user, but i don't know how to use that as the user doesn't exist yet.

So any help or ideas is appreciated, i was probably very vague in my explanation so do tell if i need to clarifyUnattended Windows 10 questions (software, updates, computer name) :)

    Thanks!

    :)

    • Right click "My Computer"
    • Click "Properties"
    • Click on "Hardware" tab
    • Click "Device Installation Settings"
    • Tick the "No, let me choose what to do"
    • Tick "Never install driver software from Windows Update"

Not-newbie but new to unattended installs questions

So I have to do a 1903 update for all the systems in my home LAN, and I've put that off because of all the time it takes babysitting each install. *Rolleyes The unattended XML approach seems attractive.

Here are my questions. If these questions show that I'm not understanding key parts of the unattended install process, Your Honor I plead Guilty As Charged.

    • Can I create just one unattended.xml file that would prompt me for system-specific info like system name but would answer all the questions about timezone, keyboard, language, etc. All systems are 64 bit, and all but 1 are PRO. That other 1 is HOME (but I'm seriously thinking about upgrading to PRO.
    • All these installs are updates, but when I read through this thread and others, they perform new installs where they wipe the drive clean. Can I do an update install with unattended.xml?

Next Major Windows 10 Update Named "Spring Creators Update"

The next Windows 10 service pack major update has been named "Spring Creators Update." Windows Insider Program users toying with Build 17618 of the operating system spotted a listing of all the major updates of Windows 10 known to the build, when running "Get-VMHostSupportedVersion" in Power Shell. The last entry reads "Microsoft Windows 10 Spring Creators Update 1803." The version number (1803 in this case), often coincides with the public release date of the update. The Fall Creators Update 1709, released in 2017-09 (September) to Insiders. Going by that convenion, Spring Creators Update could see a "branded" Insider preview build this month, 2018-03 (March), with a public release usually 3-4 weeks after, presumably before Summer kicks in.
