Windows 10: Understanding icons in File Manager

I do not understand the different icons in File Manager. The ones next to the files in a folder. eg. some are blue, some red and some just black and white. Can I delete any or most if I no longer need them. Or do I have to keep everything? This may seem like an odd question, but being a senior person I haven't grasped that part of the file manager. Please, please help

Cannot find Desktop Icon in File Explorer


My Desktop is showing icons as normal. But if I try to find what is on my desktop by using file manager, I cannot find the icon. I also checked under C;\user my name, public, default and no desktop listed on any of them. Any suggestions?

 

Desktop Icons Won't Stay Put

As per the issue description I understand that you are facing issues with desktop icons.

I suggest you try the following step in order to arrange the icons.

• Right click on the desktop.
• Click on view
• Check the option auto arrange icons.

Try rebuilding the Windows icon cache:

• Close all explorer/folder windows that are currently open;
• Run/Open a new Console window as Administrator;
• Launch "Task Manager" using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, or by running taskmgr.exe;
• In the Process tab, right-click on the explorer.exe process and select End Process.
• In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:
  Code: CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local ATTRIB -H IconCache.db DEL IconCache.db EXIT[/quote]
• Close the Console;
• In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…), type explorer.exe, and click OK.
• Close the Task Manager;
