    Unexpected encryption of files


    At November 1. I suddenly was denied access to a folder with my CAD data in my W10 Pro version 1909 environment.

    The data appeared encrypted and I was told that I, the only user of the PC and with admin rights, had to give myself permission to decrypt the files.

    How can my user identity have changed so that my own PC no longer recognize me?


    I have never thought of encrypting nor compressing any file or folder on this PC.

    I have not found any encryption option in the CAD system either and does not suspect any malware.


    I checked the certificate manager and found two file encryption keys, which I exported.

    I was not asked to provide any password.

    The next day, the keys were gone from the certificate manager.

    When I tried to import the exported keys, I was asked for a password that I don't have.


    I don't know if these files can ever be restored and I begin to suspect Microsoft to have caused this problem and it will cost med many days of work to re-construct.


    Can anybody give me advice?

    Hi Iman,

    Error message 0x80071771 means that you need to restore the file encryption key in order for you to decrypt the encrypted files. On the other hand, you can still try these steps and see if it will work:

    • Right-click the file or folder that you want to decrypt.
    • Click File ownership and click Personal.

    Windows XP file encryption

    My suggestion to you is to look into what kind of encryption the program used, and look for a way to break that type of encryption. Sorry I can't say a specific program for sure.
