    Hello Andy,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We will assist you in resolving the issue.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

    • Since the issue occurred recently, did you make any changes prior to the issue?

    • When exactly do you get the above message displayed?

I suggest you to perform Automatic repair
by downloading Windows 10 ISO image from the Media Creation Tool
and check if the issue is resolved.

Automatic Repair tool automates common diagnostic and repair tasks for startup issues like non-bootable operating system installations. Automatic repair starts the PC in
the normal manner if the booting fails. Automatic repair can be done from the Windows Recovery Environment (WRE) window of the PC.

    • When your computer starts, wait for the manufacturer logo to check the option for boot menu, it will usually be
F12. The boot menu key might differ with each manufacturer. If you are unable to find the boot menu key, you may refer the user manual.

    • Restart the computer, when the manufacturer's logo is displayed, keep pressing the
Boot menu option key to enter the boot menu and change the boot option to
      CD\DVD ROM.

    • After you boot your computer using Windows 10 DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text
Press any key to boot from CD or DVD. Press any key.

    • Select the correct time and
      Keyboard type
      .

    • Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner

    • Click on Troubleshooting> Advanced option >
      Automatic repair.

Refer to the link below on the similar issue an check if it helps.

  3. An unexpected I/O error has occurred - error code 0xc00000e9

I purchased a laptop and have been using it for about 7-10 days without issue.

This morning we switched it on to the message -

An unexpected I/O error has occured

    File: \windows\system32\winload.efi

    Error code: 0xc00000e9

This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is failing. Properly connecting any removable storage and restarting your PC may fix this problem.

    Enter to try again

    F8 for Start up Settings

    Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings

We have not had any removable storage devices connected to the laptop.

It came with Windows 10 already preloaded on to it.

We do not have any installation disks at all.

So, my question is, what do I do to solve this issue?

    Many thanks for your help

  5. Hi,

As per your guidance, I downloaded the - Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable PE Rescue Disk, 64 bit iso as my Windows 10 is 64 bit, wrote to a DVD and run the PC from DVD. I ran Macrium Reflect > Under the restore menu >fix Windows startup/boot problems. First time I only chose the last boot code option ie - Rebuild the Boot Configuration Database (BCD)abd BOOT.INI files (WinPESE64Bit 11.jpg) and then restarted the PC, but another error came up, which read - Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."

The I again booted my PC from that Bootable PE Rescue Disk and ran Macrium Reflect > Under the restore menu >fix Windows startup/boot problems, but this time I selected all the 4 boot codes options (WinPESE64Bit 13.jpg).

But the error still came up after rebooting the PC. Now, I am not able to boot my PC at all. What to do?

I have my screen-shots at the below URL for your reference, thanks.

    Thanks.
