Windows 10: Unicode hex codes not working right

On my personal laptop with Windows 10 Pro 2H22 all works fine – when I am using combination of Alt + **** symbol code it works like it must. But on work laptop with Windows 10 Enterprise 2H22 – it works only with right Alt and even then it works not every time. Sometimes it doesn't input any symbol when code is entered.But when I am trying to use combination with left Alt – it adds symbols that are totally different from what it must be. For example: Left Alt + 0171 gives me , but Right Alt + 0171 gives me «. How to fix it, so I could enter combinations with Left Alt?

Type a Unicode Character

You can convert numbers from decimal to hex to octal to binary. But those are the numbers used as Unicode code points. They're the "serial numbers" for characters.

But the alt codes are a different. They're not related to the Unicode code points. There is no numerical conversion from Unicode codes to alt codes.

Alt codes predate Unicode by a decade or so. Alt codes are just arbitrary numbers that Microsoft assigned. So you have to look up the key codes. Do a google search to find a complete list.

And sometimes just messed up.. History repaired will seldom work well.

Type Alt+45 for simple minus sign...

What exactly do you try to achieve? Typing single character, or programing it?

You can type any Unicode character (in hex) with a minor registry change..

1. as I suggested above, U+(hexcode) Alt-X
2. edit a registry key and hold down the Alt key while entering the code on the numeric keypad
3. download the free utility called UnicodeInput, which pops up with the Alt-+ key

None of these are useful on my Surface Pro virtual keyboard which is missing both the Alt key numeric keypad *Sad
