I had OS on C:\ and progams on D:\

The D:\ crashed and has had to be replaced.

Even though I have gone to start>settings > apps .... I cannot install the old programs
I tried IObit Uninstaller and it advises programs removed ... but if I go into start/all apps the folders can still be seen.

How can I remove them .... is there a standard location ins C:\ where I can delete any unused programs that are no longer installed.
Also tried Revo uninstaller - same result

    :)

    Note button in Action Centre

So the fix is in OneNote. If it can add this button on installation, it should remove it on uninstallation. Any well-mannered unisntaller does not leave behind any junk.

There are left over strings in the registry for each. You can manually edit the registry but that's time consuming or, and this is a major debate since time....use Ccleaner and then use it's registry cleaner to remove any left over strings.

  5. Ccleaner can save a lot of time scraping the registry for you

IMO it's a decent program all in all ,never had it cause probs. here . haven't put in this new PC but I might.

IMO Piriform makes plausible and reputable stuff and a potent extra strength one time use last resort malware scrubber you can use with some of the others or not without getting down to Combo fix last resort at which point it's probably time for a low level format, clean install anyway *really

I had been a regular user of CCleanaer (even before the rename) however had a few issues where it did not detect malware but other progs did .... Superanti-spyware and Malwarebytes
However I will try it again on registry cleaning

Ccleaner isn't a malware/spyware detector or remover.....it's main purpose is a junk file remover and registry cleaner. However, it does have a few other tools that can be useful at times.

well whatever CCleaner is ... it didn't make any difference. Registry tool did remove a list of unused DLLS's, but I still have several 'invalid ' folders showing.

I managed to clear some by reinstalling program and then uninstalling using normal uninstall process .... but not worked for all.

If I give example ... Easus Partition Manager 10.1 shows as an entry in Start > all Apps
    It is no longer installed
It does not show in settings / apps & features
It does not show in C:\Program Files nor C:\Program Files (x86)
It does not show when you run IOBit uninstaller or Revo

    Same for several other entries

The advice I had was to keep one drive for OS only ..
This is to prevent the ever increasing size of the Space.
In my case also means C is an SSD
When larger SSDs come down in price maybe I'll combine prog & OS ... but keep all my data as I do now on separate HDD.

I did at one point follow the advice to have profiles on separate HDD ... all went well until I needed to do repair .... Although Windows supports a moved profike ... Windows repair does not support this.
So got screwed on that bit of advice.

Well.. I don't know how many really do that. I know that all of the PC's I've see don't and I don't know the reason not to. Now the trick is going to be finding someone else here who has encountered the same issue and my bet that's going to be very hard. You may have to reinstall the OS and then all of the software. It might be your best way to go since you have to install all of the software again.

    Just my 2c.. good luck

All software has been reinstalled already. Even though it was a new HDD it picked up license info OK from C: ....
The exceptions (and issue) are the programs I'm not reinstalling.

    Most programs when installed, will:
    • Put the uninstaller in C:\Windows\Installers (hidden) or the actual uninst.exe in the installed program folder.
    • Put an entry in the registry ===> List all entries when you use "Programs and Features" to uninstall a program.
    • Put an entry in Allapps. Depending on how you select to install the program, either for current user or for all users.
      - %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs===> all users
      - %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs ===> current user
Since your D: drive crashed. The uninst.exe is no longer existed causing the uninstaller to break. You now have orphan entries in the registry and in the Installers folder.
In order to fix this problem, you'd have to re-install the program again then uninstall.
Or just open the folders in step 3 above and delete the entries for those missing programs from All Apps.

FYI, It is advisable to install the third party programs in C: as most programs are quite small (10MB ~ 200MB) except programs such as Photoshop, Adobe Reader Pro, Video editing program(s), they might take from 700MB~1.5GB.
I have lots of programs installed and if manage properly, My C: drive only takes up ~31GB.

  15. Right outside of storage I can do what I need on This PC with this arrangement and the browsers and programs I need on this winbeta 14915 SSD for 24/7 everyday computing or whenever I use this PC. I have to manage the SSD storage and move large work or media trancodes and edits in and out or link it with shortcuts or just in the directory trees and store my large file folders or directories and media on another HDD .

disclaimer : just a tooo long half azzed PC enthusiast here :really:

    storage PC in my spec.
