Windows 10: Universal MediaCreationTool with support for Windows 10 21H1 released

Universal MediaCreationTool is an open source batch file for Microsoft Windows devices to download a Windows 10 ISO image to the system the batch file is executed on. Unlike Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, which will download the latest ISO only, it is giving the user the choice to download older Windows 10 versions. I reviewed the program back in 2020 and concluded that it offered a reliable way of downloading any Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft to the local system.

Tip: you may also use other tools such as UUP Dump Downloader or Rufus.

The latest version of the batch file supports all release versions of Windows 10 from Windows 10 version 1507 to Windows 10 21H1, the upcoming feature update for the operating system.

To download the latest version of the Universal MediaCreationTool, do the following:

Select the RAW button at the top.

Right-click anywhere on the page and select Save As.

The name of the file is MediaCreationTool.bat.txt by default. You need to remove the ".txt" part from the filename.

All that needs to be done is to execute the batch file on the local system. Doing so displays selection menus which you may use to select the Windows 10 version, the language, edition, and architecture. The tool downloads the image from Microsoft's server based on the selection.

Support for the latest version of Windows 10 is a nice addition, but it is not the only new feature that the author added to the batch file.

The new version supports media presets that users may use to skip to the USB copying or ISO saving dialog right away using user defined values.

The second option adds auto upgrade presets as well. These may be used to upgrade the current system, or downgrade it, to another version and even edition. The author tested upgrades and downgrades with Windows 10 version 2004, 20H2, and 21H1, including switching between different architectures and editions, and it worked fine in the tests.

All that needs to be done is to rename the batch file by prepending "auto " to the filename to upgrade to Windows 10 version 21H1, or another numeric identifier to upgrade to a previous released version, e.g. "auto 2004 " to upgrade to Windows 10 version 2004.

It is recommended to create backups of the system before the batch file is used to upgrade or downgrade the underlying system.

Wait, but have you done the whole step-by-step guide described in the OP? DDL/DTS isn't supported natively by Windows 8/8.1 either, unless if you do the steps listed there.

DTS supported natively by Windows 8/8.1 and it should work on windows 10 too just DDL require to unlock your driver .

Introducing the next feature update to Windows 10 version 21H1

Today, we are introducing the next feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1. As people continue to rely on Windows more than ever to work, learn and have fun, we understand the importance of providing the best possible update experience to help people and organizations stay protected and productive. It is a responsibility we do not take lightly and why for the first time an H1 (first half of the calendar year) feature update release will be delivered in an optimized way using servicing technology, while continuing our semi-annual feature update cadence. In today’s blog I will cover details on how we plan to service the release, its scope, and next steps.

Fast and focused

Based on feedback and learnings during the past year of extensive remote work, learning and play, version 21H1 will be delivered with servicing technology (like that used for the monthly update process and how 20H2 was delivered). Windows 10, version 21H1 will have a scoped set of features improving security, remote access and quality. The features we are releasing in this update are focused on the core experiences that customers have told us they’re relying on most right now. So, we optimized this release to support our customers’ most pressing needs.

New features include multicamera support for Windows Hello and security related performance improvements.

Windows Hello multicamera support to allow users to choose an external camera priority when using high end displays with integrated cameras.

Windows Defender Application Guard performance improvements including optimizing document opening scenario times.

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) updating performance improvement to support remote work scenarios.

Customers running either Windows 10, version 2004 or version 20H2 who choose to update to the new release will have a fast installation experience because the update will install like a monthly update. For consumer or commercial users coming from versions of Windows 10 earlier than the May 2020 Update (version 2004), the process of updating to the new release will be the same as it has been and will work in a similar manner to previous Windows 10 feature updates, using the same tools and processes. As this Windows 10 release is targeted for the first half of 2021, all Windows 10 editions of version 21H1 will receive 18 months of servicing.

Next steps

Our multilayered approach to the development and launch of feature updates continues and includes fully leveraging the Windows Insider Program to obtain user feedback and data insights on quality. We will begin releasing 21H1 builds to Windows Insiders in the Beta channel today to those Insiders who seek to opt in, and new features will be offered in future Windows Insider Preview Builds as they are ready. Broad availability of Windows 10, version 21H1 will begin later in the first half of this calendar year, and we will provide more information on the release and how to get it as we get closer to the launch of this next feature update. Microsoft provides details on Windows 10 version 21H1 release (WHCP)

The Windows 10, version 21H1 release will not bring updates to the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program and will follow the same guidelines as 20H2. Below are more details with respect to all WHCP-related activities.

Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) activities:

WHCP requirements – No change. Windows 10, version 2004 requirements remain applicable for Windows 10, version 21H1 release.

Hardware Lab kit – No change. Since WHCP requirements will persist in Windows 10, version 21H1, the HLK will also remain the same. There will not be a new HLK release in Windows 10, version 21H1. As both Windows 10, version 2004 and 21H1 OS can be used for Windows 10, version 2004 qualification, they will be recognized as meeting the Windows 10, version 2004 qualification.

Errata – No change. All Windows 10, version 2004 errata will continue to be valid for Windows 10, version 20H2 and version 21H1 release.

HLK playlist – No change. HLK version 2004 playlist can be used for Windows 10, version 2004, version 20H2 and version 21H1 release.

Driver signature – No change. Drivers that meet all the applicable Windows 10, version 2004 requirements will be digitally signed with the same signature attributes.

Submission – No change. Windows 10, version 2004, version 20H2 and version 21H1 OS can be used for WHCP submission.

WHCP qualification – Windows 10, version 2004

Required OS version – Windows 10, version 2004, version 20H2 or version 21H1

HLK version – HLK version 2004
