Windows 10: Universal Print - Triumph Adler/Kyocera printer only printing landscape

We recently installed two new Triumph Adler printers 3508ci and rolled them out using Universal Print. The devices are Universal Print ready. Unfortunately, several users but not all reported not being able to print in portrait orientation even though that is the default setting. We checked local configs, nothing to override the default config there.When we switched from using the native Universal Print functionality and registered the two printers via the Universal Print connector, using the TA 3508ci KX driver, printing works as expected. Therefore we suspect an issue with the Universal

Universal Print ready printers are here

Universal Print is a modern print solution that organizations can use to manage their print infrastructure through cloud services from Microsoft. When deployed with Universal Print ready printers, it doesn't require any on-premises infrastructure.

For those organizations considering the switch to Universal Print, there are several choices for existing and new hardware thanks to our many partners that have been hard at work developing updated firmware and new products that support Universal Print natively.

Updated firmware makes it possible for customers to keep using existing hardware and register printer directly with the Universal Print service. Where it makes sense, you have a choice of new printing hardware that is Universal Print ready and takes advantage of the latest printing technology.

We have compiled a list of partners and printers to help you decide the best options for your organization when you make the switch to Universal Print. The list is constantly growing so keep an eye on our blogs and partner page to see the latest lists or chat directly with your printer supplier of choice to learn about their plans for Universal Print.

Printers

Printers with Universal Print ready firmware built into the device help users more easily set up Universal Print in their organizations and leverage the full capabilities of their devices on the cloud platform.

Brother continues to support the the hybrid workforce, adding additional printing devices to the list of Universal Print ready devices. devices provide the flexibility and scalability to address diverse workplace needs, supporting Universal Print customers in their journey to the digital workplace.

Canon is the first manufacturer to releases Universal Print ready printers, and has an extensive set of printers available today. Canon releases models with native support for Universal Print at a consistent pace and more are expected throughout this year. Keep an eye on their listing for existing and new models on their lists.

HP will soon release their new ‘HP for Universal Print’ Workpath app, that delivers integration with Universal Print on all printing devices that support Workpath. The HP for Universal Print Workpath app modernizes the print experience to give users simple, driverless printing. Their target release date is summer 2021.

Konica Minolta MFPs integrate with the Microsoft 365 environment, so companies can reduce print-related costs and experience an improved printing experience and increased productivity. See the Konica Minolta list of Universal Print ready printers here.

Kyocera is expected to release their first set of Universal Print ready printers by late summer and more in early fall 2021.

Lexmark is one of the first printer manufacturers to integrate their firmware with Universal Print. The company’s portfolio includes reliable multi-function printers and printers, many of them support Universal Print natively. These enable the printing experience that users demand with File -> Print expectations. See the list of Universal Print ready printers here.

Ricoh is actively developing the Smart Operation Panel application for native integration with Universal Print. Keep an eye on their listing for the latest releases.

Toshiba has recently published their list of integrated printers certified to work with Universal Print. Native Universal Print support on these devices will be available soon.

Xerox will be releasing firmware updates to add Universal Print support to select models, including the AltaLink 8100 Series of MFP devices, in Fall 2021 with additional models becoming available at a future date.

Universal Print integration with Excel for the web

You can now print directly from Excel for the web to your organization’s printers with Universal Print. Integrating Universal Print into Excel for the web gives authenticated users a new in-app print experience to search for and print to available printers in their organization. They can do that on any device with Edge or Chrome browsers without installing the printer. How to use this new feature If you are using Universal Print in your organization and you have access to your organization’s printers, you can now print directly from within Excel for the web. To do that:

Open an Excel file in the browser.

Access the print interface in one of 3 ways:

Select File > Print

Select Page Layout > Page Setup

Through the Ctrl + P / Command + P keyboard shortcut

In the Printer section of the right-hand pane, expand the dropdown menu to see the available cloud printers to which you have access.

Select the printer you want to use from the list or search for a printer by name.

You can select the gear icon in the Printer section of the right-hand pane for more printer settings

Select the Print button.

Employees do not need to install the printer on the device used because. When they choose to print to a cloud printer, Excel doesn’t rely on the underlying browser’s print UI. Instead, it communicates with the Universal Print cloud service directly to get printer information and send the document to the selected printer. More ways to simplify printing Integrating Universal Print in Excel is another step towards providing a seamless print experience in cloud apps. Other Microsoft products that use Universal Print to simplify printing are OneDrive on the web, Dynamics 365 Business Central, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 Cloud PC and more to come. Try it and share your feedback This feature is currently rolling out to Universal Print customers. The rollout is expected to be completed by the end of November 2022.

Microsoft Announces Public preview of Universal Print on macOS

When we developed Universal Print, our goal was to create a single print solution that meets people where they are and "just works—from every app, on every device. Today, we're taking a new step toward that vision by announcing the public preview of Universal Print on macOS. This capability delivers full support for Mac devices within the Universal Print infrastructure. People can now print from any Mac app using the system print dialog without having to install drivers. If you were previously hesitant to adopt Universal Print because of a mixed Windows and Mac environment, you can now move ahead knowing all your workers are supported, regardless of operating system. This capability is available immediately after enabling the feature in the Azure Portal. Adding printers A new Universal Print macOS app is now available in the App Store. After installing the app and signing in to a Universal Print eligible Microsoft Entra ID account, people can search for printers by name (e.g., "Building 8" or "Design Studio") or even narrow down the list by location, then add relevant printers to their devices. That's it – no learning curve! Try it today! Getting started If you have eligible Universal Print licenses, you already have access to this new capability! Read the documentation or follow these short steps to get started:

Configure the macOS Support (preview) setting to "Show all printers". You can access this new setting on the Settings page.

Get the Universal Print app from the App Store and sign in with an account that has Universal Print access and access to at least one printer.
