Windows 10: Unknown Disc Drive

    Unknown Disc Drive


    Using File Explorer I noticed that I had a disc drive indicated as 'USB Drive (FUnknown Disc Drive :)' This puzzled me as I don't have any USB drives connected; neither are there any card reader slots which may have been a reason.


    I checked, via Administrative Tools/Computer Management, and there I found this phantom disc indicated as 'Removable (FUnknown Disc Drive :)' but also stated as 'No Media' in the so called disc header description. The remainder, where partitions would be specified, was greyed out


    Appreciate an explanation and perhaps a method of removing the indication of this phantom and non existant drive.

    Hi Harold,

    The unknown drive could be a system recovery drive or some other drive which you don't have access to it. You may follow these steps to check what kind of drive it is:

    • Click on Search bar.
    • Type diskmgmt.msc.
    • Check description of the ESP (FUnknown Disc Drive :) drive. Also check whether the drive is recovery drive or System Drive.

    Hi,

    Thank you posting on Microsoft Community.

    I would suggest you to provide some information to help you better.

    • For which drive are you facing this issue?
    • Did you make any changes prior to this issue?
    • What error are you getting?
    • Are you referring to Disc drive or Hard drive?
    If it is a Drive partition of the hard drive let's try the below steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

    • Press Start and type This PC.
    • On top you can see file ribbon. Select a drive and Click on
      manage.
    • Select Optimize. Select the Drive which you want to optimize.
    • Click on analyze and click Optimize.
    • Restart the PC and check.
    Note: This might take a long time to analyze and optimize. So better keep the laptop plugged in to charger. If the laptop shuts down in between the process it may cause issues.

    I would suggest you to install the pending updates logging into Microsoft account.

    To assist you better, kindly provide us more details by answering the following questions:

    • Are you referring to an external disc drive that is connected via Bluetooth?
    • What is the make and model of your disc drive?
    • Is the disc drive detected under Device Manager?
    • Has the disc drive ever in Windows 10 ever worked before?
