  2. Remove Unknown Volume from defragment and optimize drives

Hi Keith. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

An unknown drive listed by it's GUID or 'Globally Unique Identifier' in the WIndows 10 defragmenter is often a Recovery or other partition that doesn't have a letter, and which should not be defragmented anyway.

There is a method here to find out using the GUID number in the mystery drive listing to find out which partition it is:

    https://www.tenforums.com/performance-maintenan...

I hope this helps. Based on the results you report back I may have other suggestions if necessary. If you will wait to choose whether the problem is resolved, then I will continue to help until the problem is fixed.

Windows 10: Unknown System (ZUnknown drive Volume I appeared :) Partition or Disk.

    Hi Leonardo,

There are several factors why you see unknown system partition or disk in your computer. It can be a recovery partition. For us to better assist you, we'd like to gather more information:

    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
    • When did this issue occur?

Meanwhile, we suggest to follow these steps:

    • Open a Command Prompt as admin.
    • Type in diskpart.
    • Type list volumes.
    • Find out which volume shows as your drive E: then type select volume N, where N is the number that the volume was given.
    • Double-check that you're on the right volume, type in "list volume" and check where the asterisk is. If it's beside the volume you wish to change, then good, if not you'll need to do "select volume N" again.
    • When you're sure you're on the right volume, type in remove letter=E.
    • Check it has been done by typing "list volume" to see the results.
    • Close the command prompt window.

It will let you remove that partition.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Unknown Device "On: Volume Manager" | Drives Inaccessable in Explorer

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

This issue seems to be related to a problem with the Volume Manager driver or a conflict with the storage devices on your system. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Disable and re-enable the Volume Manager service:
      • Open the Run dialog (Windows key + R) and type "services.msc" to open the Services window.
      • Locate the "Volume Manager" service, right-click on it and select "Properties".
      • Change the "Startup type" to "Automatic" and click "Start" to start the service.
      • Apply the changes and close the window.
    2. Run the Windows System File Checker (SFC) and DISM:
      • Open an elevated command prompt (right-click on the Start menu and select "Command Prompt (Admin)").
      • Run the following commands:

        sfc /scannow

This will scan and repair any corrupted system files.

        DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This will use Windows Update to download and replace any corrupted system files.
    3. Check for hardware issues:
      • Since the issue seems to affect both internal and external storage devices, it's possible that there could be a hardware problem, such as a failing motherboard or storage controller.
      • You can try testing the drives on another computer to see if the issue persists. If the drives work fine on another system, the problem is likely with your current computer.
    4. Try a clean boot:
      • Start your computer in a clean boot state by disabling all non-Microsoft services and startup items.
      • This can help identify if a third-party application or driver is causing the issue.
      • Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get back on track.
    5. Perform a System Restore or Reset:
      • If the above steps don't work, you may need to perform a System Restore to a previous point in time when the issue didn't exist.
      • As a last resort, you can try resetting your Windows 11 installation, which will reinstall Windows while preserving your personal files.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards
