Windows 10: Unknown USB Device ( Device Descriptior Request Failed )

I already thought about this, I even changed the BIOS battery a couple of days ago.

Use microsoft message analyzer to capture the logs of your usb port when something is plugged. You can see there the details of the problem.

Nvidia recomends a minimum of 450W psu for the gtx 660.
I would suggest you to remove the nvidia gtx 660 Card from system and use the on-board Intel HD Graphics for a while, just for testing and eliminate a Power Supply issue.

I will test that too, somehow I do feel that the psu is not strong enough. I disconnected the dvd rom to try to get a small bonus, if that matters, a long time ago.

If the psu will be at fault, then all I have to do is swear at the shop who sold me the pc, I was not limited by budget when I bought it a few years ago and I told them to be careful so the psu is great and supports the configuration and future addons, the cpu is great, etc. They managed to convince me to downgrade from what I wanted initially to buy, they said I won't need that and that.

 

psu choice is something difficult, you can not go only by the advertised watts, you need to investigate deep to find out the needs / output in the different lines +3.3,+ 5VSB, +12, -12 and so on. I mean , a cheap 650W will not deliver enough power in some Lines and pc will not work well, in the mains lines you get a lot of power but on side lines it is very poor, not enough for system.

edit: running a too small psu could lead that some hardware gets defective, it can be that your usb controller all already bad. i could not find what nvidia gtx 660 power needs in different Lines, may be you investigate that and compare with label on PSU.

 

That's why I asked the tech guys from that shop to do a proper configuration of the system, because I am not a tech guy. I took off the Nvidia videocard, and for now nothing new, the usb is still awol.

But, there is a big but. There are 3 different controllers, and the problems started around the same time. I am not sure if they could get ruined at the same time. 2 are on the back of the PC, 1 is in front of it.

So, how do I check if the PSU needs to be replaced? I can do that, but should I do it for the sake of it.

 

I think the main problems of a PSU are +5VSB and -12V Lines, mostly this lines have not enough power.

 

psu would have to be grossly under-powered to be felt thru such small power using devices like usb and even than it would hinder other parts first.

 

i am not sure about this.
try to connect a external hdd that consumes a lot of power to a usb 2.0 port and it immediately goes bad. Happened to me with 2 HDD.

 

The bios shows normal voltage, I just checked that. I have an external usb hdd always connected, it works fine. for years. no problems with it. i don't get blue screens, computer does not freeze, games work fine, work works fine. the psu is 4 years old, Seasonic are good PSUs as far as I know.

 

that's because of limitation on power usb ports can supply and it's regulated thru mb not directly from psu. most mbs can warn you when that limit is exceeded.

 

I am not saying that Seasonic are "bad" not at all, just may be too small, I would prefer to have a 650W or even 750W PSU.

Voltage is not the Problem but the Amper. And will be very difficult, by watching the Voltage, to see that the PSU has note enough Amper.
If you see a significant Drop in Voltage because of too less Amper, then it will be near to Burn in Fire.
Look at MB Manual and see the Amper needs. See also the Amper needs on the 6-Wire Plug of the GTX 660. Add all the Ampre together and see if PSU has that amount.
Why should your USB not be working? Something must be wrong. If it is not PSU, then a bad MB will be the question.

 

The initial specification for USB only had provisions for 0.75 watts of power – 150 mA at 5 V.
USB 2.0 bumped that to 500 mA, or 2.5 watts,
and USB 3.0 specified 900 mA at 5 V, or 4.5 watts

 

The problem is how do I isolate the issue. I can change the MB, I can change the PSU, but first I have to know what's wrong. Probably the best step is to go to a computer service. Although in my city there aren't too many that you could trust with a computer.
