Windows 10: Unknown USB Device in Empty Port

Following a clean install of Windows Version 20H2 (Build 19042.867), I received an error message that Windows did not recognize the last USB device connected. Within Device Manager, the device status was reported as: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed."

I googled the device instance path (USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&284537dc&0&11) and found some German site that said it is a card reader. Indeed, using USBview I saw it was connected to Port 11, Hub 3 which is where the card reader was connected. After disconnecting the card reader from the motherboard, I removed the motherboard battery for a few minutes, put it back in and restarted the computer with the card reader still disconnected. The issue persisted.

Other fixes I've tried: updating chipset, usb drivers and BIOS, uninstalling all USB device host controllers in Device Manager and restarting. I've also disconnected all external USB devices and another USB hub that is part of the case.

I'm guessing there was some issue with the card reader not being recognized that has persisted even after it is disconnected. Is there any way to clear this? Thank you

Ok, let's see it with pictures step-by-step. First right-click on the USB device and select Update driver software:





Then select Browse my computer for driver software (LAST option) :





The select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer (LAST option) :





Then select the standard driver from the list and click next:





Click next/OK as required to complete installation. Repeat the steps for all Intel USB devices. Finally click on each USB root device and press DEL to delete it, reply YES when asked. After deleting all USB root devices restart the computer.

In most cases, this issue can be caused by either an unstable/ corrupt USB controller or your computer's drivers need to be updated.

For us to isolate the possibilities, we suggest that you perform the following troubleshooting steps in succeeding order:

• Connect your USB drive to a different port. Alternatively, try to connect it to a different PC.
• Connect a different USB drive to your PC.
• Unplug your USB drive and restart your system. Afterwards, plug it in and see if it works. If the same issue occurs, perform a complete shutdown and wait for a few minutes before turning it on again.
  
• Update your drivers.

If you find that the USB drive still doesn't work even after performing all these suggestions, this is most likely pointing to a hardware issue. Thus, it would be best to get in touch with your device manufacturer for a thorough check of the device.
