Windows 10: Unknown Volumes Appeared in Defragment Task

Remove Unknown Volume from defragment and optimize drives

Hi Keith. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

An unknown drive listed by it's GUID or 'Globally Unique Identifier' in the WIndows 10 defragmenter is often a Recovery or other partition that doesn't have a letter, and which should not be defragmented anyway.

There is a method here to find out using the GUID number in the mystery drive listing to find out which partition it is:

Volume defrag

You can actually remove it from the list of the drives you want to optimize on a regular schedule. To do so, kindly follow these steps:

• Search for Defragment and Optimize drive.
• Under Optimize Drives, click the Change settings button.
• Under Optimization schedule, click the Choose beside Drives.
• Uncheck the \\?\Volume drive to remove it from the list.
