Windows 10: Unlink Windows 11 Pro Digital License

My current laptop came preinstalled with Windows 10 Home, and I updated it to Windows 10 Pro with a digital license through the Microsoft Store. I later updated it from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro.Here's my situation: I'd like to convert this Windows 11 Pro laptop to Ubuntu just because I prefer it for programming. However, I don't want to lose my Windows 11 Pro digital license. I am planning on building a new gaming computer in the next month or so, and I'd like to use the Windows 11 Pro activation on that PC.Question: What would happen if the device associated with the Windows Pro d

Thanks so much for your help. That really clarifies my situation.

Using this article as a guide, my plan is to:

1. Replace Windows 11 with Ubuntu on the laptop that currently has the Windows 11 Pro retail digital license activated on it (even if reverting to Windows Home is an option, I just prefer Ubuntu on this computer for a programming environment). I will not yet remove the 'device' in my Windows account.
   
2. After assembling my new PC, I will install Windows 11 via a USB drive.
   
3. When prompted I will choose the "I don't have a key option"
   
4. I will log in with my Microsoft account
   
5. I will go to Activation Settings > Troubleshoot
   
6. I will click "I changed hardware on this device recently"
   
7. I will chose the new PC from the list of available PCs
   
8. I will check "This is the device I'm using right now" and click "Activate." This will enable Windows 11 Pro on the new PC and deactivate the installation on the old laptop (which at this point will be running Ubuntu anyways)
   

Does that sounds like a good plan?

 

Cant Reactivate Windows 11 Pro Digital License After Unlinking Device from Microsoft Account

Hello,

I currently run Windows 11 Pro on a digital license. Initially I bought an Acer PC with Windows 7 Pro (CD Key on sticker) in 2010. OS was upgraded for free to Windows 8 Pro and then Windows 10 Pro and finally to Windows 11 Pro.

Recently, my motherboard died and I replaced the mobo and CPU. When I booted Windows, it asked me if I'm using a device listed below, and the only one listed was the same computer but with a different motherboard. I clicked no and Windows could not activate. I unlinked the device in case the Windows Activation server was seeing a duplicate of the OS, still to no avail.

Now, I can't activate Windows as I don't have a CD Key and I can't find how to reinstate my digital license.

Question: What would happen if the device associated with the Windows Pro digital license was removed from my account? Would that "free up" the activation for a new device? Could I just install Windows on the new computer, log in, and then it would automatically use the Pro activation on the new computer?
