Windows 10: Unmountable boot volume - help

Hi, the other day my PC was hanging so I did a hard reset with the power switch. When I turned it back on I initially got a "A disk read error occurred" message.


Now I get an "Unmountable boot volume" message.


I've also gotten a series of other messages during automatic repair, like:

- Kernel data inpage error

- Critical process died

- 0xc000021a

- Bad system config info


I've tried searching for help/fixes but keep running into brick walls. I was hoping someone here would be able to help. I don't want to have to perform a clean install as I have software on here for my university work that took ages to get running correctly and will be a nightmare to set up again.


If it helps I took a backup of the registry a week or so ago, and have that as a .reg file. I also have a system restore point, but I can't restore it as it says "The backup drive could not be found..." when I try to run system restore from the recovery environment. I've tried various things to fix that, as well as the main problems, but nothing seems to work and I keep going round in circles.

Unmountable Boot Volume

Unmountable boot volume usually means a bad hard drive. Booting the XP CD and running chkdsk will sometime bring the computer back to life for a while, but eventually the drive will die.
