Unsolvable 3D performance issue with windows 10 UA / FPS drops

    Hi everyone !

I really need your help for fixing this unsolvable issue I'm having with my Zenbook UX330UA.
It seriously nonsense and after trying a bunch of solutions found on the internet, right now I'm clueless and don't know where to look at. I tried posting in the gaming sub and on reddit but so far no luck. I'm posting here because after my days and days of investigation I came to think that it wasn't a gaming related (First though it was a bug related to CSGO but it's larger than that and concerns all 3D activities.)

A little of back story before to start.
    UX330UA with core I5 7200U / Intel HD Graphics 620/ 8GB ram/ 512 GB SSD/ 1080p display
Clean install of vanilla windows 10 UA, currently up to date. Graphics drivers up to date and bios fw up to date.
You can consider my system clean and not filled with junk as I just installed the basic softwares (Words, Winrar, Adobe Reader, Skype, Chrome ...)
I installed Steam and only downloaded CSGO.

This is when I found out I couldn't play more than 2 mins before experiencing regular FPS drops. CSGO runs at 70+ FPS when everything is normal and is super smooth then intermittently every 3 mins I'll get FPS drops under 10 FPS for 10 seconds before coming back to normal and super smooth.

I discovered online they was a known FPS drops issue with CSGO and Windows 10 that Steam officially addressed (solution is turning off Xbox DVR in windows 10)
Disabling Xbox DVR in Windows 10 - Documentation - Knowledge Base - Steam Support
    It didn't solve the problem.

I continued to dig in the internet in search of a solution and I found this, that seemed to fix the FPS drops issue for some people. Basically flushing out all the settings of CSGO by deleting 2 folders in Steam directory.
CS:GO - Getting FPS drops? Maybe This Will Help! - YouTube
I guess it was more meant for people who aggressively tweaked their game, It didn't change anything for me since I had just installed CSGO and didn't set up any launch command or whatever.

I found that "silly" solution suggested by a redditor that consisted on deleting Steam DirectX folder in order to re-download the directX files next time I launch the game. After doing so I ran a game integrity check (Steam option) that came up ok but it didn't fix my FPS drops.
Fixed CS:GO fps drops on Windows 10 : GlobalOffensive

At that point I decided to uninstall the game along with these folders to completely start from scratch :
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\XXXXXX\730

Reinstalled the game, ran an integrity checkup which came up with no missing files.
Launched the game, Steam installed DirectX files and after 2mins in the menu FPS dropped below 10 again *Mad

Up to that point I was focused on CSGO since there were a known issue similar to mine that many people faced but then I started considering that it might be windows or hardware related.

So I downloaded OCCT and ran a 3D GPU test and I noticed that every time the CPU temperature reached out 70° it caused FPS to drop around 10 FPS exactly when I'm gaming. Even the 3D animation lagged exactly when I'm gaming. This is it, this is a heating issue, basic throttling issue ...

I download notebook fan control and set RTM at 100%. The fan is loudly blowing, I lunch CSGO, CPU temp stays ultra cool at 50° so I'm like I fixed the heating issue only to see yet again FPS drops ! I really don't get it. The graph says it's a heating issue !

Ok I download MSI afterburn to monitor GPU usage when FPS drops happen and I actually found out GPS usage max out when it happens where it would have supposedly dropped out in case of a throttling issue right ?

So here I am with no idea what to do next or with remotely an idea of how to fix this !
This forum is my last hope to finally fully enjoy my new laptop.

Thanks in advance for any idea you may have.
    Cheers

    :)

  2. Windows 10 FPS Low FPS in War Thunder game

Under Windows 10 I have FPS drops to around 20FPS

CPU usage First core 100% all others 18-28% * overall cpu usage 50-55%

In windows 7 all 4 cores 100-95% * overall cpu usage 95-98% 60FPS wits small dips to 59 * Preset High

    MY PC spec:

    X4 860k @ 4.4Ghz

    8GB(2x4GB) 1866 CL9 Ram

    Club 3d 7790 @ 1285/1700

Any idea how to convince Win 10 to better utilize CPU in this game ?

In other games I not have this issue example in Witcher 3 I have near to 100% overall CPU usage and decent FPS.

This issue do not exist in Windows 10 beta period.

    Cheers

I guess you already have a power profile set to High Performance, just checking to be theral.

You said, you have driver updates, but you still might check, just to be sure - Driver Easy Free.

You might try this app - Bitsum. Real-time CPU Optimization and Automation Software for Windows

Thus far, you have done a great job analyzing the issue. Considering, that Creators update (15063.0) is already released, you might give it a go before trying anything else. In 1-2 weeks, it will come anyway.

    Thanks for your reply.

I do have my power profile set to high performance.
I'm actually sure I have the last Graphics drivers Version: 15.45.16.4627 straight from Intel released on March 23th. Asus's support page does't even have them online yet.
Latest Intel Graphics Driver for Windows 10 - - Windows 10 Forums

So I'm doomed hoping the creator update will fix my problem ?
Anyone can think of a lead I should investigate ? There must be something.
Regarding my GPU usage maxing out when it happens, what does that tell us ?

Hey guys I still haven't found a solution for my problem.

Here's another video with on-screen hardware monitoring stat if it's of any help.
    Look at the pattern.
    GPU temp hits 76 degrees
    FPS drops
Then when GPU temp decrease around 55 degrees everything go back to normal til the GPU temp hits again 76 degrees.

U series CPUs and the integrated GPU use a lot of power saving measures as they are intended for use in Laptops with limited cooling.
Fans are quite remote from the source of heat in the CPU/GPU chips.
It is a Laptop thus not designed for gaming as such.
A 25% drop in frame rates is not that much. A mere change of a video driver version can do that.
I see you have already been messing around removing what you perceive as ASUS bloatware, some of which maybe important for your hardware.
I have had to assume certain things as I cannot find that exact model with the same processor.

In short, live with it, consider it educational, or buy a desktop tower in which you can fiddle about with to your heart is content.

I agree with Helmut. Laptops are not designed for gaming and I am unsure why people think they are.

In this specific case, the Zenbook has the bare minimum regarding airflow because it is so thin. Laptops will always run hot when under load. There are laptop cooling pads which you put under the machine but don't expect miracles.

My advice would be to save up for a nice AMD Ryzen R5 system on a budget, which will be better able to cope with the games you want to play and have much better heat dissipation.

While I agree with you regarding laptops and gaming in general, I want to stress out that here we are talking about light gaming which is fairly common among ultrabook owners. I actually don't get your comments since numerous reputable tech websites doing laptop reviews do emphasize that these platforms (ultrabook) are not gaming platforms but are definitely ok for some light gaming.
People actually play CSGO with the very same laptop than mine which means there's a problem with mine and I'm trying to figure out what is this and won't settle for "ultrabook aren't meant for gaming" And to emphasize further this, FPS drops also occur when in the menu too and not soliciting the GPU. And if you're not convinced yet I did play for more than 1h one single time. I have no idea why this time I didn't experience this bug but I was there and played 1h thinking the bug miraculously disappeared. After playing I quit the game and relaunched it straight away to make sure the bug was gone and ... the FPS drops came back. This is why I keep trying to find a solution because this is not a platform or heat dissipation issue this is a bug !
If you have no clue what the problem is that's fine but others may do or at least be willing to investigate the issue for the sake of science *Smile

And I wouldn't call doing a clean install of windows 10 messing around a system. And you would probably like to know that after doing my clean install I made sure to reinstall the OEM's drivers using a DISM command *Wink
Regarding Asus bloatware that are missing I don't take much risks assuming we should be fine on this side :

    ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology
    ASUS Live Update
    ASUS Touchpad Handwriting
    ICEsound
    ASUS USB Charger Plus
    ASUS HiPost

Thanks for your message but no offense I won't live with it since this is not normal which means there's a way to fix it.
