Unsupported attachment file types in Windows 10 Mail App

    Hi all,

I am trying to attach a python file .py file in Windows 10 default Mail app; it fails to attach the file and shows, "some attachment file types aren't supported. try sharing with Onedrive instead." Why am I not allowed to perform this simple task? How to fix this?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Mail App - downloading unsupported file type attachements

    Thank you for the reply.

All of your suggestions have been tried with no change.

Please note that this is happening on different computers in different households.

    It is a common problem.

These computers have MS Access installed which is assigned to open all database file types.

    Please answer these specific questions?

Should Windows 10 Mail app be able to download attached database files of the .mdb file type?

Is it normal for .mdb attachments to be flagged as 'File Type is not supported'?

If Windows 10 Mail app should be able to download .mdb file types

    then given that:

    - all updates have been done

    - the Apps troubleshooter has been run

    - .mdb files have been assigned to be opened by MS Access (in explorer)

    - all computers are standalone

    - this is happening on a number of computers

    - the email with the .mdb attachment can be downloaded by 'Outlook' & and web based email programs (Gmail)

what could be the reason for Windows 10 Mail App flagging this attachment as 'File Type not supported'

    Note:

    - Windows 10 Mail App is fine with database files of the .accdb file type.

    - Window 10 Mail App is fine with many other file types - .doc, .xls, .cvs

    Thanks you

  3. Windows 10 Mail App - downloading unsupported file type attachements

    Thank you for the reply.
This is happening on more than one computer.
It happens on all attachments of this type.

It is OK if the attachment is a .docx file.

One computer has the mail app has a yahoo account as the email client.

This computer has had a clean install of Windows 10.

Another computer has the mail app has a Gmail account as the email client

This computer has had an upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7.

The same email, with the access database mdb file attached, was sent to both account so the same email is being seen by both computers.

The Windows10 Mail app on both computers has the attachment greyed out with the message 'File Type Not Supported' (see below)
    The file attachment can be:

    • downloaded if the Gmail account is accessed directly through either Google or Internet Explorer browser.
    • downloaded if outlook has the Gmail account as the email client

In other words all other email programs have no problem with this email & this type of attachment.

We need to allow this file type to be downloaded via the Windows 10 Mail app. If not then we will have to us third party softeware.
Trust that you can resolve this for us.
I am prepared to make direct changes to the registry if that is necessary.
    Thank you
