Windows 10: unwanted permission restrictions on directory

I have a directory on an external drive that has become password protected with no read access. We did not create these access restrictions and don't know how they happened. Any attempt to read from the directory gets a message about not having read access. Any attempt to change permissions requests an administrators username and password which we never set up so can't answer. Has anyone else had this problem and is there any way to bypass this. I don't even know how to find out who the directory thinks the administrator is.


This is actually our backup for a hard drive that crashed so no other copies available. I'm on windows 10 but this was last access on a windows 8 machine and had the same problem.

Unable to set restriction for local user in Windows 10

  How did you noticed that user is still able to access the drive?
  
• 
  Did you log into the local user account and check the permission?
  

I suggest you to follow the steps below to restrict the user.

• In File Explorer, right click on the drive which you want to restrict.
• Click Properties.
• Click the Security tab.
• Click on Edit to change the permissions.
• Uncheck all the permission for system.
• Click OK and make sure the change is applied to all subfolders and files.

First of all nice utility, Mindweaver!
Second of all, it's so nice to see that this section ain't dead.

I have a few questions/suggestions, maybe you'd want to see ...

• maybe you rename Get Folder button caption to something more intuitive? Add Folder, Get Folder Size, Check Folder Size or something like that?
  
• Could you add subfolder files to the right pane? (it can be a tickbox with include sub dirs)
  
• maybe you also add export list to excel?
  
• there's delete file button maybe you add delete folder button too?
  
• and finally maybe you can add UP button for directories?
