    Unwanted upgrade to Windows 10

This morning my wife came screaming into our breakfast area, saying Windows 10 was installing on her computer. She doesn't want it for reasons I don't fully understand. She says she's been getting "warnings" about upgrading to Win 10 and she ALWAYS clicks them off. Apparently this morning, that didn't work for some reason and now Win 10 will go over her Win 8.1.

When the installation is finished, is there anyway for her to revert to Win 8.1? I'm not looking forward to her complaining about being forced to use Win10.

Personally, I've been using Win 10 from the day it was released. The ONLY problem I've had with it was initially, it made all my files (at least my Excel files) READ only. That was a PITA. After much jiving around I was able to remove the READ only restriction. Hope I don't have to go through that again with my wife's computer as I don't remember all the steps involved.

And does anyone know if my wife accidentally started this upgrade or was it a "loaded gun" just waiting to go off?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 installed, new upgrade keeps failing then re-downloading.

Thanks Andre, Windows 10, build 10240.

The unwanted upgrade is version 1511, 10586.

What is the WIndows Insider Program?

Thanks Brink for the info. I think I'm going to try to get my wife to give Win 10 a tryout before reverting back to Win 8.1. Is there a time period before this reversion option disappears?

You have 30 days to revert back to older OS

Yeah, it would be a good idea to test drive it for around 3 weeks to see how she may like it.

If there's stuff she doesn't like, then please feel free to post it. There may be a way to workaround or change it. *Smile

Thanks to all for the replies. While my wife was out, she got a phone call (apparently from MS) that said her Windows activation was suspended. I suspect that was because she didn't sign in when Win 10 was finished loading.

That is a scam. Microsoft does not call people. Do not let them have access to your PC, or give them any information.

    Just hang up on them.

  10. SCAM FOR SURE! Somehow someone got your number likely from personal information being shared online! A call like that is definitely suspect and if you start getting more of the same notify the phone company that you are being harassed!

As for not wanting 10 the updated 10 app has the two buttons for immediate upgrade and delayed upgrade you have to click on in order to see the 10 installer go to work in downloading 10 by way of the Windows Update. The 10 app's KB3035583 number can be right clicked on when watched for by not leaving updated set for Automatic at least on 7. I had to hide the February 1st version all over again here on the 7 side of the dual boot with 10.

The first time was actually on a second desktop here while this was just seen on the main build needing to reboot into 7 to check up on the latest updates as well as tend to a 10 VM I run from the 7 side while it still runs while booted in 10 since both versions are running the VMware Workstation 12 Player which is one option for taking a close look at 10 while still running 8.1 there!

Here I skipped right over both 8 and 8.1 while a friend and his wife went from an XP desktop and Vista laptop into a pair of 8.1 laptops. I decided to wait a few versions until MS had the dual platform OS worked out which is much closer now with 10. That friend wanted to see 10 clean installed on a separate drive and be able to swap drives out on his own laptop wanting to keep everything on the 8.1 drive untouched but wouldn't allow me to remove the 10 app there. as well as disable the Upgrade OS feature.

I suspect my wife just clicked on the wrong button when the Win10 upgrade option appeared. I try to stay off her computer as she's paranoid about upgrading ANY electronics. However, so far she's 50-50 about now staying with Win 10. This upgrade went from Win 8.1 to Win 10.

Not that it matters, but I get way out in front of this stuff. I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 the first day it came out. I've been burned more than once trying betas so now I stick to only fully released upgrades. I did have one SERIOUS problem when Win 10 finished installing on my computer. At first all my previous data files became READ only. It took a lot of scrambling to remove that restriction. Afterwords, I think I read something that said any upgrade to Win 10 that was NOT from Win 8.1 would make the data files read only. At least this problem didn't happen on my wife's upgrade to Win 10.
