Windows 10: Update Broke Laptop!

Hi all,


So a couple of days ago (17/07/18 approx.) my partner's laptop decided to update itself. I don't know anything about what the update was only that it's a Windows update. All fine and good except the laptop never finished updating. For two days it sat on the side stuck on 98% updated, until we gave up and tried to reboot it, as we hoped that might unstick it. Only that's when the problems really started as now it appears to completely broken my partner's laptop, which will turn on, and let him log on, but appears to have no connection to any network (nor will it let him connect to one) the sound is broken (will not work - icon features a red "x") and it seems to have wiped all of his programmes, apps, photos, documents etc. away. The screen is just black, only the Recycle Bin in the corner. Nothing was backed up as I don't think he even granted the laptop permission to update - I think it just started automatically when he was shutting it down.
Does anybody know whether we can do anything to save his laptop? Or is, as he thinks it is, completely destroyed by the Windows Update, never to be used again?

I know my explanation might not be the most helpful, but if anyone else has experienced this or has any suggestions they would be appreciated.

Here is a tip is you cant fix it, make it noticeable that you broke it...step on it *Wink "Oh my gawd, did i step on your lil ol laptop, im terribly sorry" Then she has no choice but to buy a new one.
