Update changed Registry. Without Policy Editor, I cannot correct.

After a recent Windows 11 update, I discovered that something had changed the registry and stopped accessing the most recently used Excel Data file. I have the Home Edition of Windows 11 which lacks the Local Policy Editor so I cannot change it back. Any HELP?

    :)

group policy editor VS registry settings

ALL settings are applied through the registry. The Group Policy Editor is just a GUI with a set of templates containing the registry settings required.

Microsoft publish this spreadsheet listing all the policies and the registry settings they use.

group policy editor VS registry settings

    Hi,
    a. not all settings that are possible are policy settings.
I.e. the group policy editor does not encompass all possible registry changes. That shouldn't be surprising.

    b. You may note that many tenforums tutorials give both the group policy setting and, where relevant, the equivalent registry change - that's provided primarily so Home users, without the group policy editor, can make that change.

I can't comment on the last point as I've not looked at it.

As an aside, you may find Policy Plus (free) of interest. It has a useful search function.
(Easily found using a search engine).

group policy editor VS registry settings

Hi there guys. I'm trying to better understand how settings work in Windows. Some settings are applied directory through the registry editor while others are applied though the group policy editor.

To make things more confusing, policy settings can also be applied though the registry.

Are both hklm\SOFTWARE\Policies and hkcu\SOFTWARE\Policies tethered to group policy editor?

Also why is it when you apply a policy setting through the registry, it still appears as not configured in the group policy editor
